Whilst BI provides amazing insights and empowers business, they will run into their own issues and is key to promptly detect and address them. Some effective techniques can be 1. Data Governance and Data Quality checks - This is key in ensuring reliable insights and minimize other quality driven issues. 2. Continuous Monitoring - Stay on top of key metrics that may identify data quality issues, technical problems or critical trends/patterns. 3. Performance Monitoring - Monitor performance of underlying queries, systems and resource utilization for optimal performance. 4. Root cause analysis (RCA) - Investigate cause of BI issues, use the learning to improve systems and/or processes.

This is a very broad-level question and answers will vary based on contexts. However, assuming the organisation has done everything else right (from data quality, data governance and data engineering perspective) monitoring alerts for anomalies is probably the most important step. And of course, anomalies can evolve based on the business rules and situations.

BI is increasingly used to make operational decisions which, unlike strategic decisions, need analytics of real time data from diverse sources. When someone gives me data, it's always important to run through some data sanity checks. Even a typo makes the data dirty. These questions will help you get started: Who generated this data? Is this data cleaned or processed? Where does the data come from? How is it generated? Why does this data even exist? What is the intention of the data? Manual entry or system generated? They quickly show if something is not right, so you can fix it fast. Also, because it can be challenging to monitor the system status consistently, you can create automatic alerts that will tell you immediately if something isn’t right, like if data isn’t loading properly, if searches are slow, if the system stops working, or if the data suddenly changes in a strange way.

This assumes that you have using manual methods, identified metric movements that you need to investigate further. Typically, in most cases, this is a fire drill where you need to pull the right analysts on hand. Depending on the type of analysis, if you are running an experiment or doing a pre-post analysis or doing a simple distributional analysis, most of these are automated by augmented analytics tools. Based on the Problem definition, various charts and methods are used and over a period of time it can be automated with alerts to right stakeholders. Further more maturity comes with better data quality then some action also can be triggered automatically to address the problem.

Hence, typically decisions are based on gut and / or the HIPPO that needs to drive a certain outcome.
