Systems thinking is a key yet often missing area of expertise that is vital for creating resilient communities and environments. To communicate how a particular project can facilitate and pollinate a spectrum of benefits is so important as a leader. The drive to shift the focus from mitigating environmental impact or complying with minimum legal requirements towards driving long term environmental and community opportunity and resilience is key. Stepping outside of the box can be challenging but essential in good leadership.

It is crucial to have a solid understanding of environmental engineering principles and practices and be well-versed in areas such as air and water quality, waste management, environmental impact assessment, and sustainable design. To make informed decisions and guide the teams effectively, stay up-to-date with the latest technologies.

Technical expertise is vital for environmental engineers. It involves a solid understanding of environmental engineering principles, methods, regulations, and best practices. With this knowledge, engineers can plan, design, implement, and evaluate effective environmental solutions, troubleshoot problems, and optimize performance. To create a sustainable practices by using native materials, alternative materials and focus on energy efficiency and conservation. they should also focus on circular economy because if we focus on reutilization it will be save a lot of thing such as raw materials, energy, landfill space etc. So, As an environmental engineer if we focus on energy efficiency, utilization of native material, alternative resources and reutilization of materials, we can create a sustainable life.

A story: The Eiffel Tower was created for the 1889 International Exposition to exhibit the future of iron frame construction. It was a beautiful, iconic piece of art. Not engineering. When challenged to surpass it, American engineer George Ferris took this frame, multiplied it to the spokes of a wheel, and added movement. Where ever you go in the world, there is one Eiffel Tower but thousands of Ferris Wheels. Engineering.

Ethics and social responsibility should be No 2 on this list. I know some are going to say that the author of this article in no way meant to rank these attributes but I would argue, convincingly, that order is rank. How can you lead without the *glue* that holds groups together?

Environmental engineering projects are subject to various local, national, and international regulations. A leader should have a comprehensive understanding of these regulations and compliance requirements to ensure that projects meet legal standards and environmental policies.

The best engineer hiring decision that I have ever made was to hire a young person who had just received their masters degree in environmental engineering. What was special about this person was that their original undergraduate degree was in Classical Education, not engineering. The result: this person had learned how to THINK, how to learn, how to evaluate ideas, and how to communicate (both by listening and by speaking or writing). A person who has learned how to think and continue learning will get a very different result from their engineering education than someone who just learns analytical methods and tools without being able to understand and question the concepts that lie behind them.

Based on my own experience in waste management field, in addition to technical expertise, environmental engineering leader must also have comprehensive knowledge in environmental regulations (local, national, regional, international) and maintain their compliance.
