What role does a principal play in teacher performance evaluations?

I agree with this perspective, however, appraising human beings involves subjectivity that rigid metrics fail to fully capture. Over-reliance on standardized ratings risks demoralizing talented educators by undervaluing teaching complexity. Even in formal systems, the relationships between administrators and faculty set the tone. Leaders focused narrowly on scores inspire less growth than those who build trust through empathy, nuanced observations and holistic mentorship. Assessments have virtues but also limitations. Teaching excellence resists easy quantification. Perspectives welcome on supportive evaluation models grounded in understanding each educator’s gradual, nonlinear growth journey.

These processes set and executed by school leaders will help the school live its vision in true spirit

In my experience, principals have several roles: Observation and feedback Data analysis Collaborative goal setting Facilitating professional learning communities Compliance and policy advocate However, current research shows that one key role of a principal is to establish a coaching culture where teacher’s believe in collaborative dialogue. Establishing a coaching culture is the avenue to improving teacher grow and drive attainment and progress. It is high time that we celebrate collaboration and esteem the coaching model, as the old adage goes, “We get more bees with honey than vinegar.”

School leaders play a key role in creating a great school culture. One tool I found helpful is sociometry. Evaluating the social relationships of your teachers is significant to understand the culture at your school. Great tool to use, both for teachers and students.

Evaluations these days seem to focus on results in student school and growth. I think students learning is so important, but equally important is how teachers treat students. Whenever I’ve polled parents about what teacher qualities matter to them, student learning is at the bottom. Most parents I’ve polled are more concerned about how the teachers treats their student. Parents want a teacher who is kind, patient and fair. I think we need to factor those qualities equally into teacher evaluations.

There should be a lot involved here. Student and parent feedback, performance data, comparisons to prior performance data, evaluations by peers within the school, evaluations by peers outside of the school, but yes, absolutely rubric guided evaluation by leadership.

Principals/Heads should also be considered to be teachers and thus be evaluated by their educational team - I think we teachers would all agree that the best Heads of School are those who still teach at least one class in order to stay 'in touch'. It is all too easy for a Head to offer to 'model good teaching' by delivering one stand-alone class - we can all do that but it is not authentic. All criteria used for the evaluation - because let's not beat about the bush here, it is an evaluation of some kind when you are being observed no matter what it is being called - must be generated via the use of evidence based processes and consultation with staff so that a context specific, authentic and relevant approach is used.

Teacher should be evaluated on a regular basis using the lens of positive behavior support. At first it should be ensured that hiring of teacher is not done according to lowest salary expected as per the last column of the applicants data. If quality hiring is done, then only, observation makes sense. Else only observing and sharing feedback to unprofessional people is waste of time and resources.

I disagree with a lot of the people who think that evaluation should only be at certain points in the year. This is the same thinking as the idea that assessment should be summative only. Assessment should be constant as the whole program must be involved in evolution or it all fades away.

Where pay progression depends on the successful completion of performance appraisal the principal facilitates this progression by representing the teacher at the annual pay committee meeting of the governing body. For this reason it is important to conclude all appraisals early in the new academic year to enable eligible teachers to be awarded a pay increment.

What do you do with the results? You retain data to support future evaluation and it is your job to adapt them into actionable steps to prove useful. Those steps can vary quite a lot by circumstances.

I truly believe that as a Principal , you need to have an open dialogue so your team grows professionally and only when teachers see this transparency which is helping to nurture them ... they will move fom principal evaluation to self evaluation .

Multiple leadership environment, micro teaching and related activities and self appraisal sheets can involve teacher in performance evaluation process.

A major improvement we have made to performance evaluations this year is to make it a four-part growth opportunity with teachers leading. 1. A check-in meeting is held, providing space to discuss how work is from the perspective of the teacher and their desires for the observation concerning areas of focus and development. 2. We hold the observation 3. A debrief conversation is held with targeted reflection and target setting. 4. We have a follow-up observation two weeks later, where the teacher can apply the feedback and have the intentional opportunity for further discussion or feedback. These steps create accountability and development beyond simple assessment under one-and-done conditions.

Using Trust-Based Observations has centered my educational leadership practice on the learning. What is important in a school? The learning. What do we, as educational leaders usually spend our time on? Emergencies, issues, problems. Trust-based observations helps us to reframe our purpose and our practices. Currently, I support the principals in the building to develop their Trust-Based Observation practices, seeing teachers teach regularly and having pedagogical conversations steers our school toward advancing learning of each and every student in the building.

Perhaps a tool for Teachers to analyze and track their participations before sharing it with Principal or other stake holders (Peer excluding), should help guide them periodically on their performance and sincere participation. This could motivate even teachers do teach just for a job without any passion quotient. And the students achievements, even on very micro mile stones, made visible for Teachers, then that could do the magic.
