What skills and projects should you showcase in your career portfolio as a software engineer?

I had hard in trying to figure out how to learn. There are many options and its hard to choose one from youtube, udemy, reading docs only, books or something else. Over the years I have learnt the best way to learn. I hope this would helpful to many of you. Lets say I want to learn javascript. So what I would do is to start a very small project in javascript and I would take good amount of time for planning before starting on anything about my project and then I would didvide project in to bite sized tasks and before each tasks i would do lots of research to figure out what are ways to solve this problem and what is the best way. Lets say if there are 3 ways to iterate over an array I would read about all three and choose the best one.

Additionally, demonstrating your competency in software development methodologies like Agile or DevOps, database management, and cloud computing platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud can highlight your versatility and preparedness for various technical challenges.

In a software engineer’s portfolio, focus on showcasing challenging projects completed using specific languages, rather than just listing them. Highlighting complex projects demonstrates your problem-solving skills and technical proficiency. Mention any hackathons you've won, which shows your ability to innovate and work under pressure. If you are interested in applying to an internship at FAANG/MMANGA, you should know that a majority of these companies use team matching to assign you a team for your tenure. Different teams can use different technologies, so it's encouraged that students demonstrate a sense of fungibility, in the sense that they're comfortable working on frontend or backend. I suggest that undergraduate students undertake three technical projects: one focusing on backend development with an API (such as Spotify or YouTube), another centered around frontend development using the React framework, and a third project that highlights a specific area of technology they are passionate about (ie Machine Learning, Data Visualization, AI, Mobile).

Nowadays, hiring managers want to see samples of your work to gauge a better idea of what it's like to work with you on the job. Thus, whether it's a portfolio website or GitHub profile, make sure your portfolio is up to date! For your each project, - include a ReadMe or documentation of some sort that explains the project - credit other engineers, if you worked on this project with others - include information on how to clone the repository or install necessary dependencies As engineers say, treat your project portfolio like your LinkedIn!

In my assessment, as a software engineer, providing code samples in your portfolio is a critical component because they offer concrete proof of your technical capabilities. When selecting code samples, choose pieces that showcase your proficiency in writing clean, efficient, and well-documented code. Varied examples can demonstrate your versatility — segments that illustrate algorithmic complexity, elegant solutions to common programming challenges, or innovative features you've implemented. It's also beneficial to include code that shows your understanding of design patterns and principles.

Soft skills are important like communication, leadership, analytical skill and team management, these are good to be in your portfolio by you having them actually though. That shows some of the unseen qualities of you apart from the technical assessment.

From early on in your software engineer you need to showcase: - business outcomes - team and thought leadership - steps on a path to CTO, Project Management or Business Development - managerial and analytical skills - communication and influencing skills Very few individuals can sustain a software engineering role after their late 30s.
