What are some of the key elements of a lifestyle photography portfolio?

While being “specialized” has traditionally been considered a best practice, I’m offering an alternative point of view. Rather than specialize in subject or narrative, I focus more on ‘how’ I shoot rather that ‘what’. My non-studio fashion work and corporate lifestyle have a lot of overlap. My quasi-journalistic style could apply to many industries and my clients seem to enjoy the range.

I learned that the camera was my 'comfortable' way to be around anonomous people (ones I didn't know), so I thrived on opportunities to observe; and respond by affirming (with a shutter click) when I saw them showing their 'selves.' Along the way I was given 2 'technical' advises that expanded my awareness (1) Always notice 3 points-of-view: Overview of the entire relevant scene; Middle-ground ('momey') shot of the main people at a moment of significance; and a "Close-up" of some detail that added an accent of appreciation. (2) vary my position of viewing- not always standing, but climbing above, and crouching lower that my comfort zone to seen from other perspectives.

This is a really important point in selecting images. I find myself more able to weed out my “favorites” if they also happen to be outliers in the narrative. Also remember that the traditional “story arc” (in three acts) can really help you guide your decisions.

I regularly break all of these “rules”. I fall in love with all of my images and tend to overshare. Despite this, I’m doing pretty well. This may have more to do with my personality than my pictures though. in practice, your book should be able to do all the talking. It’s a bit like dating. It’s probably best to leave them wanting more. The struggle is real.
