What are some successful project-based learning models for K-12 education?

As a chemistry teacher, CBL can be used to teach different topics. For instance to teach a topic like Halogen. I present students with a challenge related to halogens, such as investigating the effectiveness of chlorine-based disinfectants in killing bacteria or exploring the role of fluoride in preventing tooth decay. Students are informed that they will collaborate in groups to investigate, experiment, and devise solutions to these challenges. Through this process, they develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills while enhancing their comprehension of halogen and its practical applications in everyday life. .

My mistake when I first started teaching was thinking models like problem based learning was the answer to learning. All of these models work well, but they don’t work everywhere. Knowing when to deploy these strategies vs when to do instruction based teaching, and the balance of them, is fundamental

One thing I've come to realise is that there is no one size fits all. Across year levels, subjects and classes you may have to to employ different methods. It's more about having a toolbox of strategies, approaches, learning models to apply at any given moment or for that unit of work. For the leaders out there, it makes it hard for uniformity and consistency, but what if the consistent thing is that your staff are equipped with toolboxes to help students make progress?
