Most of the time, DBAs are being misunderstood for being authoritative over production servers. In fact, they always try to save system outages by not getting carried away so easily when it comes to security of the databases and the resource & compute requirements on the servers. All they want, is to save the business from losing dollars. It is a responsible position with a high impact on business if things go wrong. So, it becomes their second nature to gauge the situation from all the angles. It is good to understand DBA's perspective from a business point of view and it definitely helps to avoid conflicts in a lot of situations. Try to understand the reason behind their request or rejection of your request by them.

If you're having a conflict with your DBA, you've already screwed up. As much as people want to say that System Administration is not a political position, they're wrong. Your primary goal as a System Administrator is to make sure that all systems operate and operate smoothly, this includes people.
