What's the best way to add text to a vector illustration?

I'm seeing a lot of design input here, but not a lot of file format input. To what are you adding a vector graphic? If it's PowerPoint, I recommend saving out the AI file as an .SVG and placing that where you want it in the PowerPoint. That allows you to scale it as needed as well as change colors. Most users will save a graphic out as a .png or (lord help me) a .jpg, and that will subtly change the color. When you want to keep the colors pure, adding the vector graphic as an .svg allows you to ungroup it, re-color elements, then re-group it.

I would really look hard if text is needed. Consider: * Translations, maybe use callouts instead? * Scalability, can content be used on mobile? * Future revisions, is someone able to revise?

Turn off the layer print option and turn off the layer itself, but always keep it with the file. It is an unnecessary frustration to have to go back and edit and not have access to the font information.
