I would rather use an IDE but let's call it a text editor for the time being. While choosing a text editor, I will look for these features - ✔️ It should support syntax highlighting for a wide variety of languages. ✔️ It should have enough number of plugins or extensions which are needed for development. ✔️ Intellisense is a must have. ✔️ Should have an integrated terminal so that to compile or build, I don't have to switch to any other app. ✔️ Linting, auto-formatting is a must-have feature. ✔️ Should support debugging. ✔️ Should be in development. This is important because once an IDE becomes obsolete, it is tough to switch to any other. My recommendation - IntelliJ Idea, Pycharm, VS Code etc

The reason I love VS Code is because it gives you everything you can ask for. You ask for extensions to change its look and feel, or any plugin that helps in your work, or any integration with different environments, it provides you with all of that. Plus you can use it as the default text editor of your OS which helps you modify the configuration or system-related settings very easily. We don't want to be stuck in vim ocean, do we?

So when you switch from windows to Linux, you will find yourself in trouble. You will either not find them for a different platform or few keymaps, or the way you use them would be different from the way you used to. So choosing something which is available across different variants of OS should be your priority, next comes the cost. cost-wise, this is my personal opinion that most of the basic tasks can be done without paying a dollar.

Choose a text editor that is built for what soever you're planning on doing, like using intelij for java, jupyter for python , Clion for c, and many more like that, environment that are optimized for specific languages seems to be better at execution of the languages than those that were not created to do them.

You can use more than one. In addition to using a language specific IDE where possible (one supporting code completion if not), I use text stream editing tools from the command line as well as vim, particularly for its regex support. And don’t forget git—not technically a traditional editor, definitely essential in the toolkit, & with the filter-branch feature, it’s as much an editor as awk or ed. Xnix command line tools like grep, sed, sort, uniq, and others lend us the power to search as well as edit large swaths of code faster than otherwise possible in an IDE—where else can you search within your search results, or execute a regex replace all in just the files that matched that nested search? How else can you execute a negative search?
