You want to advance your career in AI. How can you show your leadership potential?

"Lifelong learner" is an overwhelming term with the pace that AI is changing these days. That said, showcase your passion by pursuing advanced certifications. You might even have to do this outside of normal work hours. By earning AI-related certifications from reputable organizations it shows your dedication to staying updated with the latest tech. Perhaps even start an internal "user group" within your organization to encourage knowledge sharing and collaborative learning among peers. Conduct lunch and learn sessions or volunteer to lead informal learning sessions on AI topics to share your expertise and help others grow. Also actively seek out opportunities to work on projects that require learning new AI skills or technologies.

To learn continuously in this area, it is essential to work on mini-projects, perform technical evaluations, prepare for data science certifications, and participate in meetup groups. Select diversified mentors to overcome your weaknesses and obtain a different perspective. Presenting to a broader audience and sharing your knowledge is another way to stay updated.

Continuous learning is key. It's not just enough to watch videos, and pick and choose the information you're getting. I took a comprehensive class last year, and paid some good money for it. Plan to do the same to stay ahead of the game. As marketers, if we're not staying on top of this top, and marketing trends in general, we may as well hang up our hats.

As I help firms form their AI task forces the number one skill that I insist that participants have isn't really a skill... it's curiosity! Functional roles only go so far and while, yes, you need technical resources at the table, they shouldn't be selected by title. I'll take a deeply curious learner at the table over a titled expert any day.

Utilise AI to help do this to achieve the most with your available resources.

This goes back to my comment on becoming a lifelong learner. To be a leader, that learning has to be at the foremost, and the humility to know what you know, and what you DON'T know. Since the AI marketing landscape is relatively new (especially at this scale), being a true leader also means collaborating and sharing ideas and knowledge - within your team, with your clients, and even among colleagues.

So, I contribute relatively often to these discussions. And, what I've noticed, especially in the AI channel (like this discussion), is that people are clearly using AI to answer the responses. Which is kind of laughable. Seriously...take a few minutes to be yourself. AI content is generally very bland - even if you adjust for voice and tone. Use AI for research (FACT CHECK!) and outlining, then take it from there. As marketers, we can stand out in the quality of our content as the majority, it seems, are using poorly crafted AI-generated posts. Human content - with a personal touch and voice - will rule the day, in the end.

First off, be vulnerable (if you know me, this isn't new advice). The accessibility of AI and social media make it easy to think we should all know and understand everything. That is impossible! If you don't feel like a solution is shaping up the way you'd like, speak up. If you don't understand a topic or task, ask for help! Be authentic and let your unique strengths shine. Encourage open discussions and value diverse perspectives. Lead by example, demonstrating your genuine passion for AI and its potential to drive positive change. By staying true to yourself and leveraging your individual talents to support your team and organization, you'll showcase your leadership potential and set yourself apart in your AI career (and make friends)!

I'd say, be curious, commit to outcomes, follow through, build trust. Help others along the way, and always give recognition to others around you. At the same time, be your own advocate and surround yourself with your own personal "steering committee". Not every project goes well, not every learning experience is great, but if you keep yourself around others that can lift you when needed, you'll have the energy to bring fresh ideas, help others, communicate well - and show up as the leader you know you can become.
