Within 2 years I registered for PhD and landed a full-time job.

The first and foremost requirement is to match your qualification with your goal. In case the job you desire needs a higher qualification then its important to ensure continuity in education.

It is essential to incorporate all work and academic background in an orderly and systemic manner, separated by topics, and generating strong emphasis on the achievements consolidated in previous experiences, as well as attaching a description of our professional profile.

This is a step I think a lot of people overlook. Tailor your resume/CV/cover letter for the position you are applying to. Making it general can cause you to be looked over. Preparing for the interview is also critical. Do your research and learn more about the department/institution to stand out and show how interested you are in joining the team!

As we know academics is a different field than corporate/industry jobs . After completing the necessary teaching and technical qualifications,one can start as a teacher in the selected/offered stream as a weekend/once type opportunities. I would take Jennifer Garcia's idea one step further. In many cases, you can go to a university and, even more specifically, a college and find their specific CV format. Convert your CV into their format. When you this it shows two things 1) that you are hyperfocused on their institution and pay attention to detail - it helps you to stand out from the rest of those who are applying for the position, and 2) it allows those who are reviewing and evaluating candidates to see how you stack up against both applicants as well as existing employees.

Higher ed interviews can be specific. Research common questions for your desired role and practice your responses. Anticipate scenario-based questions and be prepared to showcase your problem-solving skills.

In my experience, this is key. Sending a thank-you messages after the interview is an act of courtesy, and the feedback helps you to improve, even if you do not get the job.

A simple "thank you" is great, but to truly stand out, personalize it! Briefly mention a specific detail you enjoyed learning about, like a research project or a campus initiative. This shows you were actively listening and are genuinely interested in the role and the institution. You could even ask a thoughtful follow-up question related to the discussion. It demonstrates your enthusiasm and initiative, leaving a lasting positive impression.

It's always a good idea to send a Thank you note with appreciation after the interview and ask for a feedback. However, in my experience, even if they didn't hire you but want to keep you on the list for future, you may expect a feedback.

One thing I have found very helpful in the higher education space is to find a mentor. This person can open doors to many opportunities and train you along the way. This may be someone who is already working in higher ed. whose profile you admire or your former supervisor. In my case, my first mentor was my undergraduate tutor who encouraged me to go for Masters and later PhD. You need someone who can vouch for your skills, review your application documents, advise you which path to take, etc.

If you're an experienced professional looking to transition into higher education non-academic administration, it's most important to know your transferable skills. The knowledge and abilities you've acquired outside of higher education can be applied across different industries and roles, since they are not tied to a specific job or task. Leadership, communication, problem-solving, adaptability, technical, emotional intelligence, social, and critical/strategic thinking are examples of valuable skills that can be transferred from one industry or role to the next. Assessing your transferable skills first, positions you for making the best transition into any role you seek.
