Certainly a VC would prefer investing into a product that serves a larger TAM than a smaller one, an accepted view of the TAM that is.

As a pre-seed investor, TAM doesn't mean very much. Every deck we see shows >$1B in possibility. Detailed competitor analysis and potential customers are much better indicators to help us validate the market opportunity.

Calculating the TAM can be done from a bottom up perspective and/or a top-down perspective. A founder who has done their homework in presenting a convincing TAM also needs to present their conviction in winning the market with a well-planned go-to-market strategy and approach.
