Most important "data skill" in a consulting role is the ability to ask questions to understand the business need or problem we are trying to solve. The number one reason I would hire a consultant is so I can rely on their experience. There are many ways to solve a problem, but if one cannot effectively understand and explain a business need, they would not be able to verify they've solved the problem effectively and sufficiently. If it is a technical role (e.g. data migration) present best practices and common risks, and discuss mitigation. If there is specific business challenge, ask "Why?", "How do you address the need today?", "What gets in the way?", "How would you measure success?". Then, present it back.

Highlight past projects: • Quantify your achievements. • Showcase your process. Technical Expertise: • Mention relevant tools and techniques. • Tailor your examples. Analytical Thinking: • Ask clarifying questions. • Identify patterns and trends. • Present your findings clearly. Make sure - you want to work in consulting. This job is not for everyone. It’s different type of stress than in other jobs, it’s a highly competitive environment and you must be learning constantly and you must love it. If your dream job is 9-5 and then go and watch sports on TV. Consulting will disappoint it’s a high performance job with massive time demands. Don’t believe fairytales consulting is like investment banking when you are working on a deal or delivery and there is deadline and high risk. Data should always tell a story. It should be easily comprehendible or else it is just lines and numbers which have no meaning. As a consultant, you should understand the context of the data collection and its respective scenarios. eg) Did the team velocity drop due to a vacation/festival season? Or Was the delivery date missed because of a policy change by the government and owes more work to external political factors?

Context is everything when it comes to making the data part of the work relevant to the prospective clients. If they could do data themselves, they would not be interviewing you. However, the value of the money they are investing is what it does for their business and the wider world they operate in (Data Protection rules are a big incentive in Europe). Understanding the world, the market they operate in, their business motivations and future direction as well as current state all helps to describe what you are delivering as the value or capability they gain over and above the nuts and bolts of your deliverables. It can also help them to be realistic about what your efforts can achieve and what will change for them over time.

To showcase your expertise in structured thinking - 1. Use Issue Tree to breakdown the problem into solvable subcomponents 2. Ensure MECE (Mutually Exclusive Collectively Exhaustive) for each of the branches in the issue tree 3. Make & state your assumptions as hypothesis 4. Agree on a population and sample size estimate 5. Do guesstimates to arrive at ballpark numbers. 6. Consider each hypothesis and prove/fail to prove using the ballpark numbers 7. Ask for feedback (be open to change the estimates as per new information) 8. Finally talk about the KPIs you will use to measure/monitor the success

In my consulting experience, I've found that the 'Fishbone' or 'Ishikawa' diagram is a valuable framework that is often overlooked. This diagram helps me visualize the root causes of a problem by breaking it down into categories like people, process, technology, and environment. All frameworks help to structure your creative and logical mind. In a consulting interview, it is key to be able to demonstrate how you think, the journey and the conclusion. In an interview you don't just need to use words, draw a picture. A picture of your framework can be more compelling than just your oral skills.

Begin by thoroughly understanding the data challenge presented to you. Having a specific coding knowledge or a using an output tool matters less when it is comes to building algorithms. Algorithms are the most important part of the solution. If the algorithm or the process or the approach is correct using the software becomes easier. Approach/ algorithm building comes with experience, tools can be learnt since every now and then a new tools comes to the market and one has to learn to fulfill the needs of the solution.

The one way to present data analysis is presenting your insights with data as a backup - suppose you solve a market entry case, then you crunch the numbers ensuring you speak about target market, potential revenue, costs. It’s generally expected out of you to conduct the guesstimate

The most important element is to think from a first-time viewer’s perspective. A viewer is more often than not a blank slate, and thus requires not just the outcome, but also the initial context, why the analysis is being done, and what the outcome tangibly means. If you can think as the viewer, half the job’s done.

I think understanding of data treatment in an organisation's exisiting ecosystem is very important and may prove as a long hanging fruit for effciently and effectively measuring the data quality measures of an organisation. A consulation recommendation can be provided after a very brief assessment in terms of pound/dollar value about the potentiality and the limitations of the organisations as-is data.

You can build the logic , find the methodology apply coding and ideas to build a solution but when it comes to present to the leadership or stakeholders or business leaders it is important to learn to present in their language. Either by showing graphical outputs trend analysis and linking it with the business idea and business language. Senior stakeholders and leadership understand the language of business, they would be least interested to know whether you have presented the information in an excel or a fancy BI tool, they would be interested to know how the idea is presented linking to their business needs.

A simple and positive approach is to share with your stakeholders that you will be ask them three quick insights: two points that reflect what is going well and one point that represents an improvement opportunity at each project phase. An attribute of excellent project delivery is continuous and open feedback. I recommend communicating expectations for a positive experience upfront with your stakeholders and project sponsor; thereby establishing a mutual commitment for success!

The best way to demonstrate your metal is by painting the big picture and then zooming into specific areas where you have created any impact.

If they are trying to quiz you on what SQL you would write in X event, you are getting into the minutia too much. The main way to handle this type of interview (or a job interview, for that matter) is to ask questions and listen more than answer. You should be focused on what the client is trying to achieve and understanding the problems. You should consider adding some value even if you are not chosen. It is a great reputation builder. You should also be honest if you find it is not in your wheelhouse.
