Drawing from my experience in over 100 coaching and professional consulting sessions, I’ve found it crucial to begin by establishing clear ground rules, such as the importance of honesty, openness, the freedom to speak without fear of judgment, and maintaining confidentiality. This helps clients feel more comfortable and open. In each session, I’ve encountered things I never expected, so I’ve learned not to show surprise or make the client feel judged. This ensures they feel safe and respected, encouraging them to share more openly and make meaningful progress.

Adding to experts answered, One of the most important things that I found helpful in my experience and was just reminded of by a colleague today.. is Empathy! The ability to understand and share the feelings, experiences & thoughts of the client. Being genuine and empathetic to sensitive situations and information is crucial to have especially when building the relationship and creating an open & safe communication that offers the emotional support to connect on a deeper level.

In essence, I would approach the situation with a balance of ethical care and empathy—two crucial traits when handling sensitive client matters or any human issues. Remain calm and listening actively without judgment while ensuring confidentiality at all times. Validate their feelings and avoid rushing into solutions. Instead, offer ongoing support or third party consultations.

When a client shares something extremely sensitive, they place themselves in a very vulnerable state. It goes to show that they trust me to handle this in a non-judgmental manner, they trust the therapeutic relationship enough to open up to me and talk to me about this. I will listen to them without interrupting, I will reflect their thoughts to ensure I have understood them correctly, and I will ensure the client knows that it will be kept confidential (barring the exceptions). Once the client feels heard and held, we can then discuss how they would like to proceed in the light of these revelations.

Trust is earned, it is a brand one would build and takes a lifetime to maintain; don’t rush it unless you want to get over with the meeting or conversation which defies the essence of discourse with confidence. A person would know what and when to open up; be there to listen, remain there until the voice fades out that tells the speaker volumes of how you care eventually leading up to inviting you into their “black box” …… be genuine honest as they have spilled out their minds TRUSTING you on that
