The filmmaking process is a linear workflow. each step follows the next. You must start with the best quality to ensure quality throughout. This means good planning will save you a lot of headaches and time. But also good quality images and sound pay for themselves. With high quality recording, you spend less on editing, less of colour grading and less of sound post production. Well planned, well shot footage means you could put a baby in the edit chair and you would come out with a good film. While this is almost certainly true, don't put a baby in your edit chair. I mean seriously, who would put a baby in the edit chair!!!???

Casting can make or break your film. If you're on a budget try and find actors who fit your role and are passionate about films rather than big names as big names often comes with a hefty price tag and a lot of extra costs and when not provided their interest in the film goes away, obviously the case is different with everyone. Find actors who wants to make the film work, when they have stakes in the film they will help you manage the frontline cost and keep the film in budget.

Creative Solutions are always needed no matter the scale you are operating at because there is always margin to spend more but often there is no need to do so. Plan extensively and find ways that save you time and heavy Special Effects as they cost a lot and when done cheaply they look bad.

I have often seen production companies cut costs by reducing the number of direction and production crew members. However, this is not a wise strategy. Doing so slows down the film production process. Instead, assigning more members to these crucial departments and reducing the number of assistants in other areas can be more effective. Make the remaining assistants responsible for supervision. Having a well-staffed direction and production crew ensures that the essential aspects of the film are handled efficiently. These teams coordinate all activities on set, manage schedules, and ensure that everything runs smoothly. Reducing their numbers can lead to delays, mistakes, and a longer production timeline, which ultimately costs more money.

As a line producer and assistant director I would add that within the sequence to be shot you should prioritise the main coverage (tends to be wider shots, or individual character coverage of the entire seq./scene) and then secondary shots such as inserts, bonus shots etc... Additionally, in fiction, the emotional component of the scene should be part of the scheduling criteria to maximize efficiency. This should be a conversation between the AD team, production director and ideally the talent that will perform the scene.

Using more than one camera saves time and talents energy. In some cases splitting the cameras in separate small crews is helpful with achieving inserts, establishing and some other shots that are usually the first victims.

Always add extra time to the time you anticipate. Even with everything planned out minute by minute can be disrupted by situations on set. Anything can happen, so it is wise to overestimate. Your team would rather leave early than be told to stay an extra few hours.

Some of the best advice received: A good video is made 3 times. On Script. On Set. In Post. Not having a good Post-Production Manager or Co-Ordinator can mean your great story breaks just before it reaches the starting line. Involve your Editor or Post-Production Supervisor early. That way they build the best and most efficient post-production workflow bespoke to your unique video. It may cost a little extra but saves tons if anything unexpectedly comes up while your video is in its most fragile, pre-launch state. And also makes sure you get the very most out of your entire production budget!

Networking always makes your life easier. Try and make barter deals with local people in your area, they get exposure and new clients and you get subsidised rates. Always try and manage locations, catering, props and even extra cast for more subsidised rates.

Escatimar demasiado en el presupuesto puede ser contraproducente ya no solo porque el acabado final se resienta y quede demasiado amateur, sino porque son los detalles los que harán que nuestras historias resulten realistas y coherentes y logren envolver al espectador y no sacarlo de la realidad del universo de la película. Estos detalles son una producción artística adecuada (decorado, atrezo, vestuario y maquillaje), una buena ambientación (localizaciones, cantidad suficiente de figurantes, etc), una iluminación que acentúe las emociones y un sonido muy cuidado (punto al cual no se suele prestar mucha atención en muchos proyectos).

La clave está en el guión. Un buen guión logrará los recursos necesarios para realizar la historia, impresión u otro, siempre y cuando esta sea seductora y bien realizada desde el papel. En otras palabras un buen guión encontrara financiamiento para ser realizado como la historia lo requiera.
