I think first that you need a good commercial debugger, such as C_SPY from IAR. I keep a detailed log as I step through the code so I do not go in circles, as people do when lost in a forest. Usually I start in a deep fog, which clears as I progress through the code and learn how it works or is supposed to work. Eventually the bug manifests itself, I fix it, and then it is on to the next bug. There are many things I prefer doing than debugging!
