Allowing your staff to understand you are interested in the best solution even if it's not the one you devised is probably the most empowering thing you could ever do - everyone grows, everyone benefits, everyone has value, and you become a true leader.

Ah yes...another sticky wicket. There are those thirsty for knowledge, and those thirsty for advancement...and sometimes both. As you train people up and increase their skills you are also making them marketable. Sometimes, spending $5K on training that non-team member will be the cheapest, easiest way to let them be a non-team member somewhere else. For the others, you have to be prepared let them to put that training to use. There are also variations on 'training'. Send (or bring) someone to those high-level conferences and vendor weeks - let them know you value their intellect and let them see what the 'next tier' of leadership entails. Find those gifted communicators in your staff and let them share their knowledge with the team.

In addition, setting up team members with POC types of projects while teaching and providing training so they can learn by example and within a project. This allows them to practice what they learn and hone in on their individual leadership style. Having a proof of concept type project will enable them to make mistakes and fail faster with traceable moments guided along the way by leadership.

One thing I have found as helpful is to have open and honest communication with the team and individual team members about the struggles I have faced and made mistakes on. This provides a humanistic approach and builds trust and communication channels that can be used later for course correction and measurement of already in place controls. Helping the team to see progress on their efforts and showing how they correlate with work delivery in teams and on an individual bases encourages team building, course correction and leadership skill reward and motivation resulting in positive development.

Constant evaluation and review is the best way to monitor the progress of any task given or the performance of any team. As a model, I adopted one day in week to get feedback from my team leads heading the various departments reporting to me.

To review progress we always should have a plan. Action plan. I need to know where are we going with the solution. It is good to track issue, ask responsible person what was done and at what extent. So continuous tracking against goals always helps.
