In my experience, I have heard many interviewers ask product managers to describe a time when a stakeholder asked for a change that was a bad idea. While we know that stakeholders often aren’t designers or engineers, their concerns most often have a root. My suggestion is to ask layered questions interview to uncover the root. You can ascertain if the root matches the request. You may not believe their request is appropriate, but the problem may be worth solving. It is possible that your team is already planning a similar solution. As well, you can always ask if they have supporting data. Make sure you know the rank of the concern compared to the priority list. Be a consultant in your role; support your “yes” and your “no” responses.

As an engineering team, we must value customer feedback immensely. It's a compass guiding us toward excellence. When users share insights, we should listen attentively. Externally sourced feedback triggers swift action—we should rally the team, dissect the issue, and execute solutions. But we should not stop there. Postmortems must follow, refining our design thinking for achieving a quality first mindset. As I write this, I am also thinking it is not a bad idea to implement a beta rollout internally for an early feedback. After all, others always view the things differently and it gives us an early opportunity to still achieve quality first principle before the product lands in the hands of the end consumers.
