Delegation is the most important task for many new managers and leaders to learn, especially those with entrepreneurial experience. For me, the key to delegating is having full trust in my team, so it starts with hiring and training the right people... and then once they have proven themselves, passing on some of the workload to free up time to work on thought-leadership. The side benefit of this approach is that your employees will have much more respect for you in trusting them with the work.

Too often, the day leads us rather than us managing the day. It is extremely important to evaluate whether you are defaulting to reacting to urgent requests and situations or whether you can proactively manage some of these things. For thought-leadership, it takes a lot of time and energy to develop meaningful ideas, and it typically can't be done when you're busy putting out fires. My strategy is to carve out time in my day -- every day -- for deep thinking, researching and reading, and writing. Each day is different, but the result of this work is at least one strong idea; sometimes several great ideas.
