Knowing your venue is important before the selection of your microphone. Based on the size and type of the venue such as compact hall, open garden or small room, one can take a better decision. Whether you need a handheld microphone, lapel (lavalier), a headset or a podium microphone based on venue mobility and comfort. Secondary, based on venue you can take a call whether you’re looking for omnidirectional, cardiod, or shotgun microphones based on your speaking environment and desired sound pickup patterns.

Let's get this straight. You're not choosing the microphone, the A/V folks at your venue are choosing it. However, as the KEYNOTE presenter, you should be in contact with them or the event organizer and be able to test all the A/V reuirements prior to your presentation. If not, request it. I always prefer choosing a wireless microphone because it helps in movement. Wireless microphone are more flexible, convenient, and modern.

I always use a wireless collar mic. It lets you move freely around the stage, gesture, and make eye contact with everyone! But then, it is a choice you have to make based on what gives you confidence/ moving around or standing behind the podium.

I once attended a presentation where the speaker attached a wireless microphone to their scarf which was draped around their collar/neck. The microphone frequently brushed against the scarf as the speaker moved, made gestures, or turned their head. Each time this happened, the audience heard what sounded like wind blowing into a microphone. The disruption made it hard to focus on the speaker's message. Be sure that whatever equipment you select is going to function well with your other clothing. The best way to test your microphone is just before the event a quality check should be done if it's a conference type meeting. Or if there is no chance to test it before the event then you can just say a few words before you start speaking actual content. You can just use words like check, mic check, mic testing 1 2 3 etc.. or you can ask the audience for confirmation weather your voice is audible to everyone or not.

Always consider the audience and auditorium when selecting the right microphone. I personally favor wireless microphones for their freedom of movement and flexibility.

Things can always go wrong. So don't try to be perfect - may it be for your equipment and your speech. But at the same time, DO practice your speech (in front of the mirror or what not) and test the system if the organiser/logistics permit. The feeling of being prepared is a priceless contributor to speaker's confidence.

If you naturally use your hands then you need to free them up with a lapel or stand mic. I am one of those and if I get really into the presentation and am using a hand mic, I keep pulling it away from my mouth and the levels are all over the place.
