What you should have is a viable solution to the company's problems. Be realistic. The only reason the company is interviewing you is to check whether or not you can help it get to where it wants to be. As long as you can corroborate your claims with evidence and showcase your skills, the purpose will be served.

Your resume is indeed one of the most important documents to have updated. Besides the details, facts and information, you should make sure it reflects who you are; your career path, your strengths and weaknesses, and your professional profile. Working on your resume can be an extremely empowering experience- helping you articulate who you are and what you have done over the course of your career.

I always recommend that the job seeker does a bit of research about the hiring manager (not recruiter) and his / her career path. This will help understand what is needed be successful in the type of role.

Your resume will make you or break you. Spell check it, make sure there are no grammatical errors - have at least one other person look over it for you to make sure those t's are crossed and i's are dotted! Use bullets that not only tell what you've done but the impact of the action...for every bullet try to answer the question, 'So what?'. There is where your value will be showcased. To the baby boomers, no one cares what you did 10+ years ago so keep it to the last 10 years. If what you did 15 years is relevant to the job your applying to, list it, date it but don't go into all the details - again short bullets is all you need for those at most!

Research the company. Show that you are interested in both this position and this company. Be able to talk about everything on your resume and the job posting , with specific stories and examples that are relevant to THIS EXACT position. Use the STAR method. PRACTICE! Ask meaningful questions. A great question to ask is, “what would you like me to accomplish in the first 90 days.” And at the end... ASK for the job. It might include performance reviews, hallway conversations of appreciation and “Wow, I wish I could do X like you, Name!” As you build your “love me” file you are acknowledging and bringing awareness to your work and what others see and value in you. Return to this file often; especially as you’re preparing for an interview. Let it remind you of all the ways others have appreciated the meaningful work you do. Let it remind you, you’re a great hire!

Durig the interview one must focus on as what value one can bring into the organization and the team. What makes one different from the other candidates and never be shy of sharing the achievements (even small ones and other than work) with the interviewers. Be confident but not overconfident. Be prepared and relax.

Smile You should always know that you are being interviewed by real people. Like real human beings. So remember to smile while you are at it. Well, I am not suggesting that you smile throughout the interview lest they see you as a joker. A little smile while talking will go a long way. In my experience, I have realized that a smile is always a good way to lighten up the environment in the room and it also helps you express yourself with confidence. A smile also gives the impression that you are relatable and approachable. Which is a win if ask me. I mean, who doesn't want to employ someone who is approachable? Just find the right time within the interview to smile.

Don’t forget to know where/how you’re having the interview. If in person, look at a map and time your arrival to be there in advance (driving? Where will you park? Transit? What’s the nearest stop?). If virtual, ensure your platform is properly set up with a professional background (no messy beds in the background - blur the screen). Let any housemates know you’ll be in an interview so they are quiet or stay away. And if in person, pack a TideToGo…just in case…

Be yourself and be present. Nothing more is needed. No facade no gimmicks will help. If you are genuine you will get it else it’s not meant for you.
