Asking for employees from each shift to be trained in Critical Incident Response provides an immediate reaction to any emergency while waiting on professional emergency responders to show up. Properly trained Critical Incident Response Teams can assume full command of any emergency, provide first aid to the injured, engage in basic search and rescue, take charge of basic fire suppression, and other time-critical responses that can save both lives and protect property.

3 Communication Systems

Reliable communication systems are critical during an emergency. Install robust communication tools throughout your plant, such as alarms, public address systems, and two-way radios. There are two basic types of drills that should be conducted annually. Employee Evacuation and Shelter-in-Place. The causes of these two responses may vary, but the responses themselves will have very minimal variations between them. I always encourage companies to conduct their annual fire drill (employee evacuation) in October during Fire Prevention Week, and an annual severe weather drill (shelter-in-place) in March during Severe Weather Awareness Week. Drills are the only method of discovering and correcting weaknesses in a company's EAPs, so they are extremely important.

6 Continuous Improvement

Finally, emergency response preparedness is an ongoing process. Regularly review and update your emergency plans and procedures to reflect any changes in your plant's layout, processes, or personnel. Encourage feedback from your team members after drills and actual emergencies to learn from experiences. Continuous improvement ensures that your emergency response strategies remain effective and that your team stays prepared for any situation.

Don't conduct the exact same drill every year. Throw unexpected roadblocks in the way of employees. For instance, during one annual fire drill, I asked a single employee to not evacuate and remain in her office with the door closed. She and I were the only two people who knew this was going to happen. It took 15 minutes for someone to realize she was missing, which was far too long. That led to changes in the rally point and employee head count procedures.

The only type of drill I advise companies to advertise well in advance is for an active shooter in the building. Conducting that specific drill unannounced can have very serious consequences. So, if you are going to conduct an active shooter drill, make sure it is announced well in advance, and multiple times, so all employees are aware there is not actually someone in the building shooting at people. Most other drills can be conducted without prior announcements.
