I try to choose a story that includes something I know about each of my colleagues. This shows you care about them enough to know details from their lives they probably think you did not hear. Whether it is a simple story about the weekend or a longer humorous narrative, any way I can tie in co-workers through common interests or things they have mentioned in the past is a huge push in the right direction.

A key here is sharing a vignette from your past that is hopefully somewhat comical but moreover somewhat relevant to the task/action at-hand. Revealing comical items about one's self usually pushes the other party to do the same! It's amazing how many times I hear the phrase - "Funny you should say that!" and then I am regaled with an absurdist tale, helping cement the relationship!
