In my opinion hardware has a clear limit as to what it can provide/do whereas software theoretically does not. In case of lets say sensor data, a GPS sensor can be as accurate as 0.75 inch(as far as I know) but software can use other sensors and data to estimate and go even more and work even if it is indoors for example using Bluetooth 5's direction finding spec which apple uses for their airtags. So I'd say let the hardware guys do their best and if a limit is reached then get around it by using software and keep iterating and researching.

Knowing hardware can very well help the software team . Limitatons of hardware can limit the performance of software . Memory utilization and allocation is the most critical part which plays for both the teams .
