You're torn between podcast hosts' opinions on episode length. How do you decide what's best for your show?

Deciding on the ideal episode length for your podcast when faced with differing opinions is like choosing the perfect recipe—balance is key. Experiment with various lengths and track how each performs in terms of listener retention and satisfaction. Ultimately, choose a length that allows you to deliver valuable content effectively without overstaying your welcome. Consistency is also crucial, so once you find a sweet spot, stick with it to build listener expectations and habits.

Podcast length should be based on the audience and the AVATAR for your podcast. If they are comfortable listening to long podcasts, make a longer one otherwise go for a shorter one. If a short podcast can do the work, then why make longer podcasts? It purely depends on audience's needs.

Deciding on a podcast length can be confusing. You might be tempted with the extra long shows like that of Joe Rogan and then confused about how to do it in less when you see the 1-minute shows. But the key to deciding the length of your episode is your audience. Keep you episode as long as you need to communicate the message. If you can do it in 5 minutes, keep it for 5 minutes. But if it need 60 minutes, keep it 60 minutes. There are 2 things to keep in mind: 1. There is no consistency rule to the length of an episode. It can vary from episode to episode 2. If you can strategically cut your long episodes and publish it as multiple episodes, you can do that as well. So, keep the length only as much as is required.

Normally, in a podcast, a person is drawn to the topic that interests them or wants to learn a bit more about a subject they are already familiar with. Presenting the content in a light and objective manner keeps the listener more engaged and curious about the next episode.

Find the sweet spot that balances content value with listener engagement. Experiment with different episode lengths to find what works best for your podcast and audience. Refer to the following: 1. Monologues - 5 - 15 minutes. 2. Conversation based - 15 - 30 Minutes 3. Interview Based - 30 - 60 Minutes or more also. Depending upon the topic complexity, it can vary more.

In my 10 years as a podcasters, this is one thing that I have never seen making any difference. Your audience is tuning into your podcast for 3 things: - they find value in the information you provide - they like the kind of guests you bring on the show - they like your conversational style and can relate to you In none of those 3 things, will the length of the episode play any part. A 5 minute episode can provide as much value as a 60 minute episode. So my recommendation is not to get too hung-up on episode-length-consistency. Instead focus on providing value. Keep the length as much as is required to convey the message.

Remember, listener retention is closely tied to production quality. If your podcast sounds professional, engaging, and polished, listeners will be more likely to stay tuned in, regardless of episode length. Prioritize production quality, and the right episode length will follow suit.
