You’ve implemented a carbon offset program. How do you know if it’s working?

Prior to putting the carbon offset program into action, measure and create a baseline for your organization's greenhouse gas emissions. This baseline gives you a point of comparison to gauge how well your efforts are working based on your SMART goals.

First of all, when implementing a carbon offset program, you should start by establishing clear and measurable goals, and the team should previously define how this goals will be measured in the future. Using the SMART methodology is an excellent option. In addition, organizations must rely on AI to map the entire process and thus facilitate the work of the team and ensure that human error is reduced.

Das definieren von Teil-Zielen ist eines der wichtigsten Schritte beim Erreichen von Klimazielen. Denn nur durch das konkrete Festlegen von kleinen Schritten und einer, mit allen Stakeholdern des Unternehmens, abgestimmten Strategie lässt sich das "große" Ziel erreichen und der Erfolg messen!

Um sich klare Ziele setzen zu können, ist eine Ausgangsbasis nötig. Was wollen Sie alles betrachten? Ihr Unternehmen inkl. vor- und nachgelagerte Wertschöpfungskette? Oder vorerst nur Ihre eigenen Geschäftsprozesse? Welche Bereiche haben potenziell die größten Auswirkungen auf Ihre Klimabilanz? Wenn Sie diese Fragen beantwortet haben, können Sie über Ziele nachdenken. Priorität hat dabei die Reduzierung ihres Fußabdrucks, kompensieren von Emissionn nur wenn unvermeidbar. Ihr Ziel sollte dabei nicht bei der Kompensation enden, setzen Sie sich tatsächliche Reduktionsziele, sodass die kompensierte Menge an Emissionen Stück für Stück weniger wird. Damit schaffen Sie auch einen wirtschaftlichen Anreiz für die zukünftige Emissionsreduzierung.

Es sollte selbstverständlich sein, dass nur vertrauenswürdige Kompensationsprojekte unterstützt werden. Nur rein auf Kompensation zu setzen wäre aber nur die halbe Wahrheit. Es ist auch eine tatsächliche Einsparung an Emissionen notwendig. Low hanging fruits sind hier zum Beispiel der Umstieg auf einen Ökostromtarif oder auch die Erhöhung der Attraktivität für öffentl. Verkehrsmittel und Fahrrad für pendelnde Mitarbeiter.

Companies can get support from specialised partners to achieve that, for example carbon accounting software providers. Leading carbon accounting softwares indeed provide tools that make the data collection easy for companies and ensure accurate calculations thanks to the use of comprehensive and up-to-date emission factors databases. Once a company has calculated a solid baseline year, it is ready to plan for improvements (improving calculation granularity, designing decarbonisation pathways, emissions communication and eventually offsetting initiatives).

Hier wird oft nach Greenhouse Gas Protocol vorgegangen: Unterteilung in drei Scopes: Scope 1: Direkte Emissionen (z.B. Firmenfahrzeuge, Gasheizung,...) Scope 2: Indirekte Emissionen aus Energieeinkauf (z.B. Strom, Fernwärme) Scope 3: Indirekte Emissionen allgemein (z.B. Mitarbeiteran-/abreise, Dienstreisen, vor-/ nachgelagerte Emissionen aus der Wertschöpfungskette,...) Scope 1 und 2 sind hierbei im Normalfall ohne allzu großen Aufwand zu berechnen. Scope 3 ist deutlich aufwendiger.

Your company should also clearly distinguish offsetting and decarbonisation activities, to keep track of all data points. In this company's communication, there should be a very clear and transparent way to present sustainability efforts to avoid green washing and be honest about the different strategies. It is very interesting to also consider carbon insetting which consists in investing in decarbonisation projects within the company's value chain.

It is helpful to communicate transparently about your carbon offset program. Regularly share updates, progress reports, and verified emissions reductions with stakeholders. Transparency builds trust and demonstrates your commitment to addressing climate change.

Ensuring a well-structured plan is crucial, coupled with its effective implementation across all operations and the value chain. Regularly revisiting the plan, incorporating real-time data post-implementation, and fostering clear communication while involving key stakeholders are essential steps in monitoring impacts.

Only reporting net emissions (actual emissions minus offsetting) is at high risk of greenwashing. An organisation should report gross emissions first (and should demonstrate reductions overtime in real emissions). Offsetting can be a valuable additional step but is worthless in my view without reporting gross emissions.

A great way to ensure reporting is efficient is by engaging a committee of champions across the organization from the start. This will yield to a more mature measurement and reporting that will impact greatly on the organization, which is way more valuable than the report itself (as it takes time to mature) and with time result in an effort-driven report rather than an evidence report.

Gerade in Ländern wie Deutschland ist der Wissenstransfer und Erfahrungsaustausch ein wichtiges Mittel um die immer größer werdende Wissenslücke beim Thema Nachhaltigkeit zu schließen. Aus vielen Gesprächen kann ich sagen, viele Unternehmen wollen nachhaltiger werden und mehr Impact leisten, aber ihnen fehlt das notwendige Wissen und die Experten, weshalb das Thema sooo wichtig ist!

Assess the effectiveness of a carbon offsets program by measuring actual carbon footprint reduction, verifying offset projects, ensuring additionality, evaluating project impact, maintaining transparency, engaging stakeholders, demonstrating long-term commitment, and monitoring market demand for offsets. Regular reporting and feedback help gauge program success and sustainability.

Ensure that the carbon offset program is integrated into your broader sustainability initiatives. Assess how well the program aligns with internal policies, practices, and other environmental initiatives within your organization. It is also helpful to stay informed about relevant carbon pricing regulations and reporting requirements in your jurisdiction. Ensure that your carbon offset program aligns with regulatory expectations and contributes to your compliance efforts.

Ein weiterer wichtiger Punkt ist, dass alle Stakeholder bei der "grünen Transformation" vereint werden. Das Thema hat eine so große Bedeutung für die Unternehmen und die Gesellschaft, dass es nicht nur um den reinen Gewinn bzw. finanziellen Vorteil gehen darf, sondern auch darum, wie die Umwelt und Gesellschaft davon profitieren, was auch eine Art von Gewinn darstellt. Beides stößt sich in den meisten Fällen nicht ab und kann daher gut verknüpft werden!!
