When giving feedback, remind the member that it's a gift. Begin with what they do well - that sets a positive tone. When moving to what to improve, be careful of the words you use. Instead of "should", try "consider". Also, specific examples help make it real. Remember, feedback is not criticism, it's for improvement.

In my experience, giving feedback can be a complicated task and it largely depends on how the collaborator perceives it. What has worked for me is to bring specific data from situations that reflect the point we are discussing. This reduces the risk of creating a personal opinion. Another thing is to also make the collaborator feel that the goal of the feedback is their growth. Listening carefully to what the collaborator wants to achieve is also a very good piece of advice that has served me well.
