Leadership is extremely loaded, and one should not confuse it as only leading large teams or driving strategic initiatives of the organization. As an entry-level engineer, practice the rigor of delivering commitments within the timelines, develop ownership, and discipline, collaborate and more importantly be a team player. In the early career, it is important to be on a continuous learning path. Learn Learn and Learn.

As an entry-level engineer, balance technical expertise with leadership by focusing on: Continuous Learning: Stay updated with industry trends to build deep technical skills and credibility. Communication: Clearly articulate complex ideas to both technical and non-technical teams. Initiative: Lead small projects or tasks, demonstrating leadership by taking ownership and driving results. Collaboration: Engage in team discussions, offering insights and encouraging a collaborative environment. Mentorship: Mentor peers to reinforce your knowledge and develop leadership skills. This balance sets you up for growth as both an engineer and a leader.

Continuous learning is essential for the growth of a young engineer. Quite often, training is misrepresented as purely technical.  Apart from learning from experience, training in leadership, emotional intelligence, cultural awareness, conflict resolution and active listening is also crucial. There should always be small improvements per day, contributing towards long-term career empowerment.

Apoyarse en miembros más senior con mayor y dilatada experiencia dentro del equipo de trabajo es algo muy recomendable. Si te fijas en sus tareas y en lo que se requiere para llevarlas a cabo, podrás establecer una planificación de aprendizaje requerido para alcanzar un buen equilibrio entre habilidades blandas y duras, es decir lograr tener un perfil mixto técnico gestión.

As an entry-level engineer, mastering collaboration is crucial. Focus on developing skills to work across functions and independently drive features through their entire lifecycle. By owning domains and working closely with teammates, other engineering teams, and cross-functional stakeholders, you’ll not only enhance project outcomes but also set yourself apart early in your career. Developing a balance of technical expertise, strong communication, and teamwork brings you more success and prepares you for leadership roles.

Taking on minor leadership roles within projects or your team, like coordinating tasks or shadowing experienced leaders. This helps build your leadership skills while you grow your technical expertise.

Establecer una comunicación fluida tanto con tu manager como con tu jefe de equipo para que te ayuden a diseñar el recorrido que debes de ejecutar con tal de evolucionar tu perfil a un contexto también de tareas de gestión o de mayor grado de complejidad.

Reflecting on what went right, and what didn't, and what could be done better next time is a great skill to develop and use. That continuous improvement mindset is instilled in many engineers, but quite often they don't apply that thinking to their own performance. Those that do tend to become engineering leaders. I have found it most helpful to have at least one if not a couple other technical team members in your organization that will help you do this work together. If you can find others that will engage in this exercise, offering critical analysis and thinking, it can accelerate your learning and growth significantly. Much of this work in my past was accomplished over lunch!

El feedback es muy interesante y siempre te va a sumar en la superación de objetivos a lo largo de tu carrera profesional, por eso es muy recomendable que recibas feedback de tus superiores y al mismo tiempo de ese compañero más senior que te apoya y supervisa en el día a día.
