In my current role as I am currently studying towards ESG Directors certification. I interact with international colleagues from other parts of the world and I happen to be the only African, who also lives in Africa, as my other fellow African brothers have emigrated to Canada. Belonging should be part of DEI initiatives, and embracing different cultural backgrounds and different languages enriches the diversity perspective in our team. Our diverse backgrounds and different locations from different parts of the world , enhaces the quality of our group discussions as we each had to introduce ourselves and our backgrounds to ensure we can form a cohesive team for the next 6months.

Describe a particular project or situation where you worked with a diverse team. For example, In my last role, I was part of a project to redesign our company's logistics network. Explain the objectives and tasks the hand. Example,Our goal was to optimize delivery routes to reduce costs and improve delivery times. Detail the steps you took to ensure effective collaboration, such as fostering open communication, respecting different perspectives, and leveraging individual strengths. For instance, I organized weekly meetings where team members from different departments and cultural backgrounds shared online workspace to facilitate collaboration.

Example, I used clear and concise language in meetings and provide written summaries to ensure everyone understood the key points, regardless of their native language. I find that a critical and simple way to develop understanding empathy and relationship in work is to have opportunities for simple interactions such as small group or informal activities where shared communication of stories of how they came to their current role. This helps people to get their origin story out there so that others may learn about our diversity. This can build empathy and understanding of diversity rather than create fear. Once people feel that they understand each other better it creates an opportunity to grow together as a team by sharing strengths and weaknesses, and helping to develop each other. This can help to strengthen the whole team, the rules and responsibilities, and therefore the outcomes.
