It is very critical to understand the background of the audience before communicating any information. As 3D printing specialists, it is very easy to share a lot of terminology and information that might be considered overwhelming to the listener. For people who are new to the technology, it is always good to start with the concept of additive manufacturing and the method of printing. A brief introduction into the material forms that can be used would also be beneficial. For professionals, delving into the technical properties and advanced features of the technology would be more useful to understand the key features of the printing process.

As someone who had to explain my hobby and also teach juniors, I found it best to use analogies as well. I often compare it with building with Lego bricks. As a Lego structure is made by stacking Lego Bricks, similarly a 3D Printer melts plastic and stacks it on top of itself in various shapes. The layers in Lego structures are similar to layers in 3D Printing. Each layer shape compliments the one before and after to make 3 dimensional objects. If there is a printer in front of me, I give live demos and quizzes to make it interactive and interesting. Even convinced a few to buy printers for themselves ;P
