My first step would be to envision what the future state could look like if the problem didn't exist. For example, if we take a step back in time and imagine the pitch for an iPhone. One could start by articulating the problem (e.g. difficulty connecting with others, multiple tools for calendaring, email, voice calls, etc) before pitching the innovative idea. What if instead the pitch started with " imagine having a single tool where you could access all of your contacts, connect to the web, manage your email, take pictures and that tool could be held in the palm of your hand...would that be worth pursuing?" Both approaches would lead to a great discussion yet which would you rather hear if it was you sitting at the table?
Gathering support from key influencers and colleagues can significantly boost the chances of your innovative idea gaining traction. Identify individuals who have the influence to sway decision-making and get them on board early. Share your vision with them, seek their feedback, and incorporate their insights to strengthen your proposal. A coalition of supporters not only adds weight to your idea but also helps in diffusing potential resistance within the organization.
