Here's how you can enhance your photography skills continuously.

Being a professional in photography takes dedication and practice, but good things come for those who work. * Know your camera: Take time to understand your camera's features and settings. * Understand composition, lighting, and exposure are the keys of great photos. Learn about the rule of thirds, different lighting techniques, and aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. * Shoot regularly: The more you shoot, the more comfortable you'll become with your camera and your photographic eye will develop. * Find inspiration: Look at photos you admire and analyze them. It will help you develop your own style. * Take challenges: Try new things - experiment with different genres of photography and explore unfamiliar shooting conditions.

Practice makes perfect. Photography takes 90% skills and 10% talent. The more you practice the better you are. In portrait photography it is all about knowing HOW TO REPEAT result. There is NO LUCK!

The Basics are Different for Everyone, Here are Mine: - Know the Ins and Outs of your camera! Forget auto settings exist, shoot manually. - Brush up on the history of photography. You would be surprised how much of its history is engraved into the everyday “rules of photography.” Once you know the rules it’s much easier to break them, or use them to enhance your work. - Experiment, experiment, experiment. People talk about niche all the time. There’s really only one way to find yours, it’s on accident. Even if you learn absolutely nothing while experimenting, it’s fun (and you most certainly always learn something).

I once had a professor tell me a good studio day is going to the studio, even if you do not work on anything. CARRY YOUR CAMERA! Even if you don’t feel like taking pictures, build the habit. As a photographer your camera is an expansion of your eyes. Even if you prefer portraiture, and you see a beautiful landscape, this is practice.

Sometimes even if you do not want to do it - DO IT. Never leave home without camera. Seek challenges. Find interesting people. It may be hard - like for me - since I do not work on TFP basis yet it let's me practice selling skills!

Different genres require completely different skills. Wedding Photography and Product Photography are about as similar as Bricklayers and Plasterers!! They both build houses and have some overlap in skills, but for the most part they're completely different. And you wouldn't employ a plasterer to build a wall! So definitely explore different genres; you never know what you'll fall in love with. Improving your skills in one area will definitely have a knock-on effect in others. But if you're a professional photographer, be careful how you show your explorations in your portfolio. If you're a wedding photographer and suddenly include a product shot, it may make you look less specialist. A 'Jack of all trades and master of none'.

Genres are challenges. When you are good at portrait photography go to other genres where portraits compose part of it: reportage, product linking people and products, sports. In this way you can exploit your perfect skills and learn new ones.

Gear is a trap. Never believe in it as in something that makes photography instead of you. Invest in supporting gear - tripods, backpacks, bags - the tings that make your life easier.

Basic photo processing is now as much a necessary skill as knowing your camera settings. Taking the time to learn batch processing techniques will allow you to shoot more and spend less time processing your photos in the future.
