By encouraging younger researchers to reflect on and learn from their experiences, they become more confident in taking risks and making decisions. Fostering an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, concerns, and feedback without fear of judgment is my number 1 priority when mentoring students.

I make it a point to celebrate both small and big successes, reinforcing positive behaviors and achievements. This recognition boosts morale and encourages younger researchers to continue striving for excellence. Personal notes of appreciation make the recognition more meaningful. Whether we finished an experiment or the final thesis was awarded Honours, I am in favour of public recognition and I am the biggest cheerleader of my teammates.

In the past, I have sought evaluation of my performance as a mentor, to redesign my training methods the next time I work with a student (if applicable). Combining standard questionnaires provided by the educational instutions where I have collaborated, and my own questions, helped me to tailor an evaluation system that considered the specific context of each thesis project. Similarly, acknowledging the unique qualities of each team member helps to tailor my support and feedback to suit their individual needs. This helps others to understand their strengths and how they can leverage them, which boosts their confidence.
