Guarantee is a strong word to use for any project. However, there are certain steps you can take to maximize the probability of a timely delivery: First, you need to fully understand the scope. Talk to the stakeholders and technical people to have a grasp on the scope of the project and the feasibility/effort of critical points in it. After this, you should know what is in and out of scope, and where to anticipate hiccups (from a technical standpoint).

I find its always a strong position to be in to have two deadlines. The ultimate deadline is a hard cut-off. But that hard deadline shouldn't be your target deadline. Plan to have things completed in advance of any hard-targets. And be prepared to reduce the scope to achieve this. Prioritise all your tasks into "must haves", "should haves" and "want to haves". Once you've done this, map out the dependencies with the above priorities in mind to establish your task order. Regularly check back in against these prioritised tasks to see how the project is progressing, and shuffle around your resources and time plan as things take longer or go quicker than anticipated. And, crucially, communicate your progress with the key stakeholders.

Milestones are checkpoints that help you measure progress and keep the project on track. Identify key deliverables and intermediate goals that lead up to the final product. These milestones should be specific, measurable, and time-bound. Try to define milestones in a way that each one creates value, they are fairly evenly apart, and each one can be simply explained to an outsider. A milestone that is vaguely defined will likely result in overall failure.
