All behaviors projected are a result of something. There must be a trigger. You must examine all behaviors differently. Look at the trigger, the nature of the behavior, and the effect of the behavior exhibited. Finding a solution for the root cause based on the situation at hand will inform the prevention measures for future occurrences. Staying calm while handling the behavior is also necessary. It is easier to propose the solution of a unique behavior noticed when calm. Sometimes the students test to see the patience of the adults in the room and respect the adults who can attend to them calmly amidst confusion as opposed to those who are super reactive. We should learn to use regulation strategies too. Eg. taking deep breaths.

I look at both the immediate need and the bigger picture. Looking at all the potential triggers such as home life, societal barriers, etc. I also assess if the challenge is due to a skills deficit that can be taught or supported. I also look at the immediate cause. Is the behavior to escape the current situation, to get attention, to access a preferred item or because it feel good to the person? When we as adults think about challenging behavior we need to remember it’s only challenging to us, the adults. The behavior is often quite effective to the student or learner. I generally recommend meeting the child where they are at, validating their feelings, identifying the problem together and coming up with a solution.

I set him up on an incentive-rewards system, as well as visuals. Staff was trained on everything. Our student got into a routine that felt safe and trusting. Don't forget fun. Students need fun.
