Deep Learning, Agents , and GenAI will change UX + Design, and require upskilling for practitioners to maximize CX insights w/o leaving insights on the table due to an inability to mix and analyze different data. The potential insights from customer data (qual and quant), across all channels, can be improved w/ deep learning approaches. A knowledge of the types of neural network pipelines appropriate for different types and scale of data and objectives is important. Next, design production will use AI agents acting autonomously and following brand guidelines to execute creative workflows w/ human creative direction. And finally, we can try to make tech accessible to many more, with natural language interfaces and voice UX.

When users search for information or actions, they don't have a uniform mental model of the information hierarchy. As designers, we shape this structure & hope users adapt. There are 2 exciting ways to harness AI to make information accessible without burning too many brain cells. - Traditional: As a diligent librarian, we refine categorization to align with users' mental models. Think personalization, recommendations, and smart categorization. - Radical: Picture a guide dog leading the way; we let users give us raw signals and then decode their needs. Enter LLM-powered chatbots! AI is changing the game for information architecture. Are we building better maps or giving users a compass that points directly to what they want?

Leveraging natural language processing (NLP) powered by AI/ML can significantly improve search functionality by understanding context, semantics, and user intent, delivering more precise and relevant search results. Additionally, ML can provide intelligent autocomplete and search suggestions based on user input and historical data, further improving the efficiency and accuracy of search interactions.

We all have a lot of cleanup, tagging and organization to do!

Will AI’s need structured data to learn? An AI can intuit the order in our chaos to gather and store data. AI enabled ecosystems need to be able to discover their own methods (that are optimized by its ever maturing understanding of human behavior) of gathering information rather than relying on human signals.

Data is the most important aspect when it comes to AI and ML algorithms giving rich outcomes. We must focus on structuring data for machine readability. For example, organize data in formats that are easily interpretable by machines, such as structured databases or JSON files. An application of the above would be storing product information in a relational database where each product has a unique identifier and attributes like price, category, and description are stored in separate fields. This structured format allows AI algorithms to efficiently analyze and utilize the data.

As much as we'd all love to have well-structured data the first time we set out a model for anticipated use, how that data is used changes over time with the addition and subtraction of needed tags and metadata. No one gets it right the first time, unless it's one-and-done static data, or rigid formatting gates for input/output. As someone who has worked primarily in frontend engineering, iterative changes, multiple languages (typescript anyone?), and networked services passing through multiple user interfaces has little chance of remaining consistent. This will be a challenge or an opportunity for understanding how we think and work and training our tools to best serve human nature.

Working at PETA, there was a significant amount of adjustments and new content created to connect the issues of animal rights to more generalized news and events. A national news story about SeaWorld, for example, would be an opportunity to feature how to get involved in gaining the right for an animal to not be used for entertainment purposes. An AI/ML informed dynamic system would have greatly reduced the code work and deployment of yesteryear, even improving how and where stories of prominence are most effective, while shuffling other stories based on attention and affinity attribution.

The use of feedback loops is key to the Information Architecture - once the architecture is not immutable, on the contrary it is in constant evolution. The use of IA to make the loops more frequently helps the fine tuning of the architecture.

Ethics are often missing in IT builds, it's one of the first shortcuts taken when project costs blow out. However I like to look at what's coming out of Europe with data privacy, and ethics, and build with ethics as a strong core of any design. ts really simple, having an ethical .mindset allows people to trust and value your content and even business and it's one of those intangibles in business.
