Here's how you can incorporate decision-making into the creative process of filmmaking.

It all depends on your choice of picking up the script, in which you believe in and visualize it. Your believe, experience and vision of portrait your script will determine the direction of what you want to achieve and show to your audience. Today the audience are very smart and know what is real and what is reel, you can go beyond your audience reach if you deliver quality and sensible content.

In my experience, it is absolutely key to know what is the ultimate goal of your production. Is it money? Is it exposure? Networking? Etc. Once knowing this, you'll make every decision based on this goal in mind. That way it works like a funnel leading you exactly where you want to be. It is super important to keep in mind all your limitations as well, you can't create the next Harry Potter if you have a rom-com budget... BUT knowing what you have will guide you to make smart decisions having a clear vision in mind.

Before anyone will invest in your production they have to want to be involved emotionally and believe in your film. A lot of people focus on ROI instead the content of the script. You attach recognizable talent because they love the story and their agent must want them to be involved. You can't get the agents coverage without a great story, not just effects.

I believe in a more organic approach. Not in an opportunistic, strategic manner. It takes longer but is more personal. If a Producer sees the uniqueness, freshness they'll give their all to get it produced.

It's not just about knowing the destination, but understanding each stop and detour. This clear vision allows me to anticipate challenges and seize creative opportunities along the way. Additionally, having well-defined goals allows for more efficient use of budget and resources. I can prioritize spending on elements that truly enhance the narrative and avoid distractions that don’t add value to the project. This focus not only improves the quality of the final product but also ensures that every decision aligns with the overall vision of the film.

And good luck is essential. Most great films were made before film schools and self help books about making films. Remember you must have talent. There are those who get their films made because of dumb luck. But you do need luck! Some casting decisions go through many incarnations because the actors are unavailable or think the role unsuitable.

Analyzing a script is like unraveling the DNA of your film. It's essential to dive deep into the core themes, character arcs, and crucial scenes. This intimate understanding allows you to make precise and meaningful choices regarding casting, locations, and visual style. It’s not just about what’s written but how it will feel and look. It’s crucial to consider how every decision—from lighting to costumes—can amplify the story’s message. It’s vital to find actors who don’t just play a role but live and breathe the character. The right actor can bring a new dimension to the narrative, making the story come alive in a unique and authentic way.

When I first started out as a filmmaker, I’d just returned from London where I led a comic book empire & branched out into film with my first horror short, “Luna”. I was TERRIFIED. Absolutely right. But the Director must have good judgement, taste and purpose. A strong "vision " is essential. I believe Godard likened making a film to building a Cathedral. Every artisan has a purpose. But their is an architect whose vision the help endeavour to realise.

Collaboration is the key because if you value and engage the production team the set will run effectively. Garry Marshall was my mentor and he used the same basic production team on every film. People were happy when they were called, the day out of days was completed, and everyone went home happy. That is the key to delivering on budget.

People watch movies, not the team. Make sure every dollar spent is seen and you create the foundation for success. That philosophy got us Lionsgate, twice.

I always say, if you’re truly creative, your grammar has amazing synonyms—and by synonyms, I mean endless ways to convey emotions and stories. Who needs proper grammar when you can paint a picture with words that leave grammar Nazis scratching their heads? When you're that clear and dazzling with your visual storytelling, budget constraints just become another plot twist. You'll have producers tossing money at you because they can't even tell you’re cutting corners. So, embrace your creative synonyms and watch as you turn fiscal limitations into Oscar-worthy narratives without missing a beat!

Remember that filmmaking is a team effort and the best idea wins, even if it comes from the least experienced member of the crew. There will be delays and unforeseen complications, that's where team work comes in and egos need to be put aside. You are not alone. Everyone wants the project to succeed. Listen to your actors, they often know the characters better than anyone and can tell you why a scene's not working. Listen to your editor, they can tell which shots can be dropped. Listen to your AD and DP, they can tell you which setups will take the longest and inform which darlings are worth killing and which are worth fighting for. And listen to, respect, and thank your PM team, they are working minor miracles every day.

Many times, people overlook post producers, but believe me, they’re the unsung heroes—the final writers and presenters of your work. Including them in pre-production? Pure genius. They’re like wizards who can conjure cost-effective, time-saving solutions out of thin air. They might even save you from making decisions that look as fake as a reality TV star's smile. A savvy post producer will often encourage you to shoot things practically instead of relying on CGI and VFX, because nothing beats the authenticity of real footage. So, treat your post producer like royalty; they’re the ones who turn your cinematic pumpkin into a golden carriage.
