It's the responsibility of the engineering head to scour the tech articles and publishing continuously to find out stuff that could be disruptive to the work (both positive and negative ways). Recently I took a series of sessions for Linux and shell scripting for my QA team to enable them to understand, modify and write new shell scripts for performing automated tests instead of manual only tests. It took time but results are there to see. Almost all the team members can now understand shell scripts and some are even writing new scripts to increase automation driven tests within the team.

Training is a mixed bag in my experience. The most important thing is for people to practice. It doesn't matter if it's a new skill or existing skill in a new context. If you just passively watch a trainer, you didn't learn anything.

Take "learning organisation" beyond a management buzzword and actually implement the concept. Fun, easy, free and effective. Allicate a regular short time - just after the morning pre-start is ideal. Attendance is optional, max time 15 minutes. You can kick it off, but try to get everyone to present occasionally. Potential topics: • lessons learned from a recent project - good way to implement "wins" • senior engineers present topics - generate cross functional awareness • ask vendors to present their latest product • someone presents interesting news • graduates present their final year thesis This is also a good forum for engineers to develop presentation skills in a safe environment. It works well, keep it fun and informal.
