After discussing the feedback and clearly outlining your expectations, document it. So many times, I have seen leaders have a conversation but not write it down or share it with the direct report. It leads to people remembering the conversation differently. You can develop the expectations (goals) together, ask the employee to develop them, or you can. The important thing is to write specifically the expectation and include important specifics like deadlines, actions, and behaviors. If you documented the conversation, share it with your direct report as a summary and allow them to respond with questions or feedback. Make revisions if you agree. Now your expectations are fully documented.
