How can peacebuilding and development be linked and coordinated in post-conflict situations in Asia?

With a background in crisis management, defense, and international security, I have to emphasize the last leg of the nexus; security. Peacebuilding and development efforts must be intrinsically tied to ongoing efforts to enhance human security, through efforts such as security sector reforms. Quite often, peacebuilding scholars see themselves blind to the need for a capacitated security sector as an enabler for not only peacebuilding efforts such as reconciliation, political settlements, or addressing root causes of conflict but also development efforts. Without sufficient security provisions, we cannot engage local communities nor ensure the timely and cost-effective delivery of development support - it all goes hand in hand.

Global Conflict Context: I've come to realize that achieving peace is particularly not possible when both parties involved are not genuinely committed to it. Sustainable peace is the result of collective efforts from all parties concerned. Therefore, fostering a shared commitment to peace among all stakeholders is paramount in creating a stable and enduring environment. It's crucial to understand that lasting peace works best when local communities take the lead. Creating institutes led by peacepreneurs, following the idea of "peace by locals for locals," ensures a self-sustaining approach, acknowledging the intrinsic role of local ownership and engagement in building a resilient foundation for peace.

Peace building in development project is the key for the sustainability of the project we are implementing. In lowlands of Ethiopia, where the main livelihoods is pastoralism resource based conflicts are common. In building resilient pastoralist and agro-pastoralist communities, creating social cohesion, building trust, putting in place customary conflict resolution and equal access to resource are the main focus. In my experience, doing conflict analysis, strengthen formal and informal governance structure, stakeholder engagement in the implementation of the development project is more sustainable than otherwise.

Integration is necessary. But consider how different are the tasks related to the two domains. Development is linked to a world of performance and consensual perspectives; outcomes and objectives are stated at the very beginning, time is functional to those. Peace processes need to be build among different and conflicting worldviews, they need time, and no one can really foresee their outcomes.

The fruits of peacebuilding and the treasures of development share a profoundly interconnected relationship. They present themselves as forces of harmony that must be implemented in unison within a society to sustain a decent life for citizens. The subject of peace is consistently present within discourses on development. Without peace, you may have a physically developed society, but internal chaos will reign, creating a lack of trust and social cohesion among citizens. This may lead people to deem their society's institutions untrustworthy or often engage in internal conflict, leading to daily disorder.

Peace building and development are complex especially in Asia especially in the context of Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Myanmar. The problems and contexts are different. Refugees problem is one. Collapse of the economy is one such problems. Building up military strengths is another problem. All are inter related.
