How can you center users in your iterative design process?

If a user goes off on a tangent, don't correct them immediately. First, it comes across badly and they think what they are saying is important - even if you don't. More importantly, you often see or learn things you might not have known about. If the tangent is truly a tangent (something completely irrelevant) or has gone on too long, then I gently redirect them in one of two ways. (Option 1) I politely remind them about what we are really testing, e.g. "That is a great observation and I have noted it down, I know your time is valuable and we have more to look at, so I'd like to go back to...". (Option 2) I ask them a question that brings them back to the main topic, e.g. "Can you please go back to page 'A', I'd like to ask you...".

In very simple manner, its all about intended use, intended user and intended behavior to focus on streamlining all. This makes nexus for centralizing user in all aspects along with adherence of complaince as well.

Centering users in your iterative design process means making sure that everything you design is focused on the needs, problems, and feedback of the people who will use your product. Let's take an example of cooking for guests: *Know Your Guests: Find out their food likes and dislikes. *Ask for Preferences: Check for any special dietary needs before cooking. *Taste Test: Have them sample the dish early on for adjustments. *Empathize: Imagine if you'd enjoy the meal from their perspective. *Check Happiness: Success is measured by their satisfaction. *Seek Feedback: Post-meal, ask how to improve for next time. This approach ensures everything you cook (or design) is perfectly tailored to those you're serving.

When I was working on redesigning a mobile banking app, we began by conducting in-depth interviews with users to understand their frustrations with the existing interface. One user shared how difficult it was to transfer funds between accounts quickly, while another mentioned the confusion around bill payment options. By listening to these user stories, we were able to clearly define our design goals and prioritize features that would address these pain points.

Think of this as setting up a GPS for a road trip. You need to know where you're headed. Dive deep into who you're designing for and what their world looks like. It's not just about creating something cool; it's about making something that fits into their life seamlessly. Ask, listen, and empathize deeply.

During the ideation phase of a website redesign project, we organized a design workshop with a diverse group of users. Together, we sketched out different layouts and features based on their preferences and needs. We then created clickable prototypes and conducted usability testing sessions with these prototypes. Seeing users interact with our designs in real-time provided valuable insights and helped us refine our ideas to better meet their expectations.

Now, imagine you're in a kitchen trying out recipes. Some you'll taste and toss, others you'll tweak. The key is getting those dishes out to your guests (users) quickly, gauging their reactions, and adjusting the recipe accordingly. It's about being brave enough to fail, learn, and try again, always with the user's taste in mind.

I prioritize user research to understand their needs, behaviors, and pain points. Incorporate user feedback at every stage, from ideation to testing, to ensure your designs meet their expectations. Utilize personas and user journeys to empathize with users and guide design decisions. Conduct usability testing regularly to validate design assumptions and refine solutions based on real user interactions. Iterate based on user insights, continuously improving the user experience. Collaborate with stakeholders to align business goals with user needs, fostering a user-centric approach throughout the design process.

I do agree. Collaborate heavily with the other customer facing teams because they experience these customer issues from a first hand perspective. It’ll help give a different angle to the level of frustrations these customers face in that product/feature.

Include the intended user target groups as part of ideation. They have probably found some work arounds, or are finding different ways to meet that problem.

After launching a new feature on a social media platform, we closely monitored user engagement metrics and gathered feedback through user surveys and in-app feedback channels. We noticed that while users appreciated the new feature, they were struggling with a particular aspect of its functionality. We quickly iterated on the design based on this feedback, making adjustments to improve usability and enhance the user experience.

This is where you become a detective, looking at all the clues your users have left you, piecing together what works and what doesn't. Think of it as refining your recipe based on feedback. Some ingredients will stay, some will go, and you might find some surprising new combinations that delight your diners.

Ganz wichtig für die Identifikation von Usability-Befunden ist die Beobachtung der User. Es geht nicht darum, dem User während der Nutzung der Anwendungen Fragen zu stellen. Throughout the design process for a healthcare app, we maintained detailed documentation of user research findings, design decisions, and usability test results. We regularly shared these documents with stakeholders and team members, ensuring transparency and alignment on project goals and progress. This open communication helped foster collaboration and ensure that everyone was working towards a shared vision of creating a user-centered product.

Picture sitting around a campfire, sharing stories of your journey. This step is about making sure everyone from your team to stakeholders understands the twists and turns of your design adventure. It's how you ensure everyone is on the same page and appreciates the process behind the final product.

In an ideal space, decisions are made based on user feedback. There may be times where the technology is not feasible or that business cannot commit to the change. It is imperative that all options are objectively evaluated on the basis of value delivered vs effort required( development, cost etc)

Encourage users to provide feedback, ask questions, and share their thoughts openly during testing sessions and can be facilitated through verbal prompts, surveys, or post-session interviews. Actively listen to users' feedback and observations without bias. Pay attention to both verbal and non-verbal cues to gain a comprehensive understanding of their experiences and perspectives. Record and document all feedback, observations, and insights gathered during usability testing sessions. Analyze the collected feedback to identify recurring themes, pain points, and areas for Use the insights gained from user feedback to iteratively refine the design. Implement changes based on the documented feedback, test the updated design with users again.

Never use « I » but « they ». You are not the user. Empathy for the users do not mean that you are facing the same problem while experiencing the same situation. Always use the « 5 Whys » as the problem stakeholders present you might not the be really issue. Clearly define the core problem, do not look only at the tip of the iceberg. Also use the « How might we » sentences to look at divergence solutions before selecting your best bet.

After launching a new e-commerce website, we analyzed user behavior data and conducted post-launch surveys to gather feedback from users. We discovered that while users appreciated the streamlined checkout process, they were experiencing difficulties navigating the product categories. Armed with this knowledge, we made iterative improvements to the website's navigation menu, resulting in a more intuitive browsing experience for users.

Lastly, think of this as sitting down after a long day, reflecting on what you've learned. What skills have you honed? What would you do differently next time? This is about growing, not just as a designer but as a problem-solver and storyteller.

Actively observe how users interact with the product or interface during usability testing sessions. Pay attention to their behaviors, feedback, and pain points, understanding of user needs, preferences, and challenges. Analyze the collected data and feedback to identify specific areas where the design can be enhanced, it could include addressing usability issues, improving navigation flows, clarifying instructions, or optimizing the overall user experience. Implement changes based on the insights gained from user testing, might involve making adjustments to the interface layout, modifying functionality, or revising content to better align with user expectations.

It helps when the company or Senior Management support a design-led product or (software) solution implementation process or are at least willing to incorporate it early on, despite what industry it is. If that is not a given, it will be difficult to have the user as a focus within the iterative design process. In that case a profit- and time saving oriented approach is more likely what is at the forefront.

Remember that the 'user' is not always a neatly defined entity. Take healthcare context for example, the patient might be defined as the user, but the physician or nurse is also a user - with a totally different perspective and set of goals. Add to this the demands of the clinical pathway and restrictions imposed by the healthcare system and you will begin top understand that user centric, or patient centric is not as simple as it sounds. To design a mature solution that will work, and that will be successful in the market the process needs to be more of a matrix - balancing multiple needs and in some cases making careful judgement calls in favour of business goals, and sales efficiency.

Always remember, at the heart of all this is your user. Each step is an opportunity to understand them better, solve their problems more creatively, and design solutions that genuinely improve their lives. Keep your mind open, stay curious, and never stop asking, "How can this be better for the user?"

There needs to be an ensured steady access to a user testing pool. Internal testing and "dogfooding" help with initial insights as well.
