The motion of the waves causes the mechanical components to move, which in turn generates electricity through electromagnetic induction. To convert any Kinetic energy or potential energy we need to dives, one which will convert these energy into a rotational energy then one with will convert the mechanical to electrical energy. First device is called turbine and second is called generator, so combination of both along with some auxiliary components generate power from waves.

Additionally, wave energy is intermittent and variable due to changes in wave frequency, amplitude, and direction which can occur rapidly and unpredictably. This makes it difficult to match the grid demand and supply. Furthermore, wave energy can have negative environmental impacts on the marine ecosystem such as noise, habitat alteration, collision, and electromagnetic interference. It can also face opposition from local communities like fishermen, boaters, and tourists. These challenges must be addressed in order for wave energy to become more feasible and competitive.

Wave energy is still in its early stages of development and deployment, yet there are some successful and innovative wave energy projects around the world. For example, the Aguçadoura Wave Farm in Portugal was the world’s first commercial wave energy project, operating from 2008 to 2009 with three floating point absorber devices that generated 2.25 MW of electricity. The Wave Hub in the UK is a test site for wave energy devices that has been operating since 2010, providing a grid-connected offshore platform that can accommodate up to four WECs with a total capacity of 30 MW. Australia’s Carnegie Wave Energy Project is the world's first grid-connected wave energy project that also produces desalinated water, operating since 2015 with three submerged pressure differential devices that generate 240 kW of electricity and 150 kL of fresh water per day. Greece’s SINN Power Wave Energy Module is a modular and scalable wave energy system that can be attached to existing structures such as breakwaters, piers, and platforms; it has been operating since 2017 with a single point absorber device that generates 24 kW of electricity.
