How can you get a robotics internship or co-op?

Begin by clarifying your career goals within the robotics field. Decide whether you're interested in hardware, software, AI, or a specific application like autonomous vehicles. Knowing your goals will help you narrow down your search and help grab the right opportunities.

Maybe even more important: know how you can contribute during your internship. Robotics startups can offer tremendously cool internships where you own real topics, but you will also have to be able to deliver and bring the startup forward. Be clear on your value add / special expertise, then search a startup that needs what you offer ✌️

Complete background research on what companies are operating within your chosen field. Understand what platforms and technologies they are using and what skillsets they are looking to hire and develop. Reviewing articles on the company website and browsing current vacancies will give an insight into the company before you ever meet a representative.

As a mechanical engineering student, I am more interested in robotics projects that involves designing sophisticated hardware controllers and enhancing it's productivity by adding artificial intelligence to it.

I would also emphasize that quality shines brighter than quantity. Take GitHub, for instance – having a single, high-quality, well-documented repository that gained positive feedback from the community holds more value than several obscure, subpar ones. If time is a constraint, consider contributing to established open-source robotics libraries as an effective way to showcase your value.

To stand out, you'll need a compelling portfolio. Start by working on personal robotics projects or contributing to open-source initiatives. Document your work meticulously, including code, designs, and project outcomes. A well-constructed portfolio showcases your skills and dedication.

While a robotics portfolio is vital, I slightly disagree with the emphasis on hobbyist or academic projects. Prioritizing real-world applications and addressing industry challenges can set you apart. For instance, instead of a generic OCR program, focus on using it to detect quality anomalies in production lines. This slight shift demonstrates practical problem-solving skills needed in real world challenges, making your portfolio more appealing to potential employers, as it showcases your ability to contribute meaningfully to the field and make a genuine impact.

There are plenty of published DIY projects, you can Consider building some robotic system (or purchase it if you want to focus just in software), deploy it, do experiments, and publish results in GitLab/GitLab Snippets (or other well-known alternatives), or even continue some student or group training projects and try to publish the results (I personally know cases of this). Plenty of datasets available, that might be useful for simulations or modelling.

There are many benefits to bringing visual prop, it allows you to showcase your skills, control the content of the interview and set yourself apart from others.
