How can you learn about live events and get started in the industry?

There's the academic route - learning the theory in the classroom. Then there's the practical route. I think the practical route should come first, and you should spend time in the classroom after, to gain specific knowledge and refine the skills gained on the ground. To get started, get working. Whether you find paid roles or start by volunteering, you need to learn the ropes. Be enthusiastic, take initiative, accept responsibility and do what you're asked. Get on with the people and you'll find they keep on offering new opportunities

If you have absolutely no experience, the best place to start is by volunteering at an event that interests you. Many events need and ask for volunteers. If you commit to an event as a volunteer, treat it like a job: show up on time, be ready to work for the amount of time you've committed to, and put in your best effort. Stay engaged during your work, and ask questions if needed. The organizers are relying on you, and you need to demonstrate that you are reliable. Be sure to thank them after your shift and stay connected if it was a good experience. Volunteer experiences can lead to paid work down the road. Either way, it's something you can put on your resume.

Live events are real-time activities that are experienced and participated in by an audience at the same time they are happening. Some examples would include trade shows, concerts, sports games, conferences, and online streaming events. I think thats the biggest learning for people. Live can be online too!

Thinking about what your format will be will help everything else fall into place. If your working on live events, there a million of big and small things you will need to do to ensure your event runs smoothly. Once the format is decided and who your audience is will then help you figure out what you have to do next and get the ball rolling.

Live events are stressful but they give you a creative satisfaction that I have found no where else. You can really create a vision and gain the satisfaction of seeing it in the flesh on a decent timescale compared to some other industries that can take years, if not at all. You have the power to excel, to learn, to connect, to drive results and ultimately be part of a wonderful industry community; passionate, hard-working, creative & dedicated. Learning events as a career is an adventure, you are always learning more and there are so many paths you can take.

You are also able develop practical skills of which some you will be good at and others you will not! Live events also give you the opportunity to better understand cultural influences and differences. Para aprender sobre los eventos en vivo, existe ya carreras universitarias, cursos, charlas, cursos online, pero todo eso si bien es muy importante, no se compara con el hacer. La experiencia te dará realmente la clave de qué y cómo aprender sobre los eventos en vivo, cada uno es un mundo y cada mundo tiene no solo sus reglas sino sus complejidades. Hay que mirar mucho, investigar y estar atento.

Nothing beats hands on learning experience gained through volunteering at events. You will learn how events are run behind the scenes, meet event organisers and gain insight into event planning, production.

First thing is to determine what in live events interests you. If its Theatre - There are drama schools and universities providing theory and practical courses. If its working with bands and festivals - again universities will give you an insight but you will have to get a job with a supplier and work your way up gaining valuable experience. If its corporate- again uni courses with an attachment to an agency or supplier. Enthusiasm, willing to learn, working long hrs, being helpful on site or in the office environment is important as is getting on with others in the team or office. Once you are accepted with a company and you get on well with the team they will also mentor and guide you but they should not be taken for granted.

You can’t beat practical experience. Get involved at what ever level, in whatever function you can and observe all the elements involved in creating a live production.

The best way to learn about live events is it attend as many as you can and all kinds of live events. While you are there, talk to the staff - everyone from safety stewards, bar staff, managers, technicians. If you say you’re interested in getting into events most people will be more than happy to talk to you and answer questions. Then, once you’ve got an idea about what elements you’re interested in, speak to people and ask to shadow someone for the day. It’s such a varied environment to work in, narrowing down the elements that most interest you will help focus your energy and also where to gain experience.

To get started in the live event industry i'd suggest some of the following: Education: Take relevant courses. Short and long term investment in your education. Experience: Attend events, intern, or volunteer. Network: Connect with professionals who you want to learn from. However, ensure they know why you want to connect. Live CV: Showcase your work. Let people know who you are. What does your current online presence say about you? Skills: Watch, listen and ask questions. Knowledge and understanding improves your employability. Stay Updated: Follow industry trends. Apply: Look for internships / jobs aligned with your interests and skills. They might not be where you end up, but are all be part of your journey.

The best way to start in the live event industry, is to just start. My journey began by assisting in the kitchen of a live venue in my hometown, and now I've become a significant presence in the South African live events scene. Every opportunity is a move in the right direction. Just take that initial step, and everything else will follow suit.

Start off as site crew soo you no what it’s like to graft ,and get a understanding of reading maps working with other trades going uni to study site management won’t work in your favour, it’s hard to tell someone what to do when you haven’t done something your self

Most live events need volunteers! I recommend getting involved as a volunteer first to see which niches of the live event that you find joy in the most.

Well, getting started for someone all depends on what they want to do within the industry... Interning is always an option, however, if you like the more technical side, like audio, lighting, camera or scenic, I would recommend going to work for an equipment vendor to learn about all of the equipment used in live events. You will more than likely work in the rentals part of the company, which will teach you everything you need to know about the equipment, from operation, testing, and maintenance. Through working here, you will eventually meet more and more contacts and at some point you will probably be invited to go and work events for the company. Don't be afraid to put 5 years or longer in with the company, It can only help.

Be nice to work with. I know in sounds trite but it’s not. Be the person people enjoy being in events with and you’ll find you don’t have to try hard to get work. Lots of good event professionals take on varying roles across different projects. That stems from being someone that others enjoying working alongside. Be that person.

Be the person to say "yes" to any request for someone to do the task in hand, even if it's not glamorous. If you've identified a "challenge" in a task, before you raise it to the PM/organiser, think of a solution to the "problem" it may not be the solution but you develop a solution mind set..and people will pick up on this and you'll develop your career. Any one can pick out the problem, but few will volunteer a solution. Be easy to work work with.

A great way to start is to volunteer to work at charity events (things like marathons, race events, etc) you'll gain incredible event experience on the ground in a variety of different settings. Contact your local volunteer centre for details of events in your area.

Be a team player and at times leader. Help and learn from others. Appreciate mistakes are made and learn from them whilst also preventing others from making ones you know. Respect H&S especially when under pressure and tired. Manage time efficiently and have time targets. Think every event through from the perspective of all participants: performers, production, staff, audience, security, medical personnel etc

Network and build relationships with people in the live event space who bring value. As you continue to strengthen your knowledge on live events, it’s critical to strengthen your network and relationships as well. Through these relationships find someone who can mentor you along the way. This person will bring insight, knowledge and experience that will continue to help you grow. Due diligence - You can’t grow and learn if you are not willing to put the work in. Like in any industry, consistency of your work pays off. Break the rules - Well, break the rules, but back it up with effectiveness. So stretch the rubber band as far as you can go without popping it. What it springs back to will be different from what you started out with.

Get involved. Whether volunteering or taking a role that isn't necessarily your dream role, you need experience. As your experience increases, so will your competency, and your network. Be the most useful person at the event, don't moan and do ask questions, and you'll find your network starts to produce work offers. I got started in the industry by working for free and volunteering to take the tough jobs. Not everyone can work for free, but you can work hard and be an asset to any role you take

Attend industry conferences and networking events, seeking mentorship from experienced professionals, and if possible, gaining hands-on experience through internships or volunteering. Staying informed about industry trends, regulations, and emerging technologies also contributes to a well-rounded understanding of the live events landscape.

My Top Tips: - Don’t over complicate things, keep your actions simple. Make a step-by-step plan. Before you know, you will be far into your timeline of accomplishing your new events role. - Don’t compare yourself, instead work & speak to your strengths. Everyone is different & you have something different to offer. - Practice your interview style & know your answers to set questions. If nothing else, you will be more confident in your interview. - Don’t be afraid to fail; we need to fail to learn & build character. The journey to a successful career isn’t an easy one, but it is worth it to end up with a career you love. No one is perfect. I love producing & creating events, although it has been hard at times, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Networking is paramount, but never at the expense of professionalism. Performing your role to perfection speaks volumes and gets you noticed for the opportunities you want in time.
