We should always remember, the key to protect our team is through prevention, preparation and education. We should provide a comprehensive approach that shall includes following steps: 1. Carrying out COSHH / Risk Assessment for hazardous materials. ( Identification and assessment ). 2. Providing regular training to all team members about the nature, risk associated and safe procedure to handle hazardous materials. 3. Ensuring appropriate PPE is available and used correctly. 4. Ensuring safe storage to prevent leaks, spills or accidents and disposal of hazardous materials according to local regulations and MSDS.

One thing i find helpful is to first taken an in-depth analysis of our work process from the start to the end and look in a step by step format, and establishing controls in terms of procurement, transportation to site, storage, training for workers prior to use. This can be followed by communication of the hazardous posed by the materials during use and how workers can protect themselves, and what to do in case of an emergency/accidental spill, and lastly, safe practices for disposal of the hazardous waste as per authority in jurisdiction. An example could be preparation for the flushing of chilled water system piping where personnel have to work with chemicals all through.

In my experience also it is very essential to understand the properties of the material through reading the MSDS and other COSHH assessments in place, looking at the hazard and precautionary statements, and all other properties of the chemical that could work contrary to the health and safety of our employees, Looking through the recommended PPE and checking whether we have this type of PPE in our stores and where missing, arranging for procurement of these for our personnel

We should regularly monitor the workplace for any changes in physical or environment conditions that could increase the risk of exposure to hazarous materials. 7.
