I find in modern machines a CPU failure itself is uncommon. What I do find more is "bad" RAM, especially on machines utilizing XMP or similar. The CPU now houses the memory controller and there are a number of voltages and timings that are critical to making sure memory is reliable. On these machines I will often disable XMP and retest at JEDEC specs. If it passes using a utility like Karhu I will then assess again. Adjusting timings, memory controller voltages, or RAM voltages is risky. Do your research. What does this CPU support according to Intel/AMD? What does this board claim it supports? The lowest listed speed wins. Is your RAM being identified correctly?

Always making sure your new parts are compatible is just one step in replacement. One processor may function well, but replacing a part that 64 bit, with a 32 bit part could cause more issues. Furthermore, checking small things like will my OS allocate or even recognize my new RAM, when I replaced it with the board and other parts will help with setup and daily usage

I would also add that when replacing parts, to clean the "tower" or case, too. Doing this prior to removal can eliminate issues with dust build up, and cross contamination. Dust can cause your fans to clutter and build up more heat, which can destroy a fan, cause the power supply to work hard, etc.
