How can you successfully transition careers at any age?

You might not follow your passion. You might find work that pays decently and is stable. That funds your passion. It's great when our work IS our passion, but it doesn't have to be. Consider who you are at your core and what you find rewarding. A job you might have thought was "below you" might be just fine in this wacky world. I would stay away from personality tests and career quizzes since they tend to keep you in the box you're in now. One told me that I should consider being a Water Resource Specialist. What??? Start with introspection. Don't look to anything else to define or label you. Consider what's rewarding and pays the bills. The rest is optional. :)

There isn't a perfect time to change careers as such - the timing will differ from person to person and it's linked to a strong/ deep desire to do something else with their professional lives. So, when you start to feel that the fear of the unknown is smaller than the 'pain' of staying where you are for the next few years, you will be at YOUR right timing! When that happens, the most important thing is to be clear on what is it that you are looking for. A good exercise for you to start this clarity journey is to look back on everything you've done so far and start to note the times that you felt the happiest and the ones when you felt the lowest in your career - what do these times have in common?

Successfully transitioning careers at any age requires a plan, not a leap. It's not just a career shift, it's a personal evolution. My 57 year old uncle went from politics to opening a restaurant. And guess what?! He is doing amazing. So whatever you do, plan right. Know yourself, assess your skills, find your strengths, research your target market, reframe your experience...And if you must, seek out valuable advice from professionals and trusted friends and family.

Incorporate keywords from the job posting, but avoid overuse to prevent them from becoming empty "buzzwords." Instead, focus on showcasing your impact and providing evidence of your skills and qualifications.

Every job hunter must have a good résumé and portfolio. Customize your résumé for each job using important keywords and measurable achievements. Rule of thumb: Your résumé should never go beyond one page. You can also make a portfolio with examples of your work, projects, or recommendations to demonstrate what you can do. Make sure your résumé and portfolio are easy to understand, short, and professional.

I believe in having a master resume and then sub-resumes that are created and suited for the job after the master resume. Your master resume should have every form of experience you have ever partaken in, even if it is not a typical corporate job. Through your master resume (which should be updated regularly) you can create sub-resumes that can be sent to employers when applying for certain job roles as they have been tailored based on your vast skillset and career experience. This way you can easily evaluate which skills and which experience seem more important for certain career pathways.

Not everyone can derive at a career direction just like that and it's okay. Self-discovery is a journey with varying time periods. I recommend being really open to new ideas and people. For example, if you are an engineer and got invited to a marketing seminar, don't immediately turn it down just because you may think that Marketing is 'fluffy' and for 'creatives'. Go, absorb new knowledge and have fun. In time to come these pieces of new information will cross link with one another to give you an increasingly clearer sense of direction. Play the long game instead of being short-sighted!

While I am not sure if it is applicable to everyone, I am glad to share some insights on how I made transition to very different roles at various stages of my career. Below are steps I took: 1. Leverage your strength to gain the exposure to Cross-Functional projects E.g. As a Sales who move into Marketing, I gain exposure by participating in New Product Launch projects. 2. Get mentoring from other functional team E.g. As a Commercial Lead who move into in BD&L, I learn how to deal with contracts with the help of Legal colleague. 3. Supplement your on-job experience with in-class learning. E.g. As the person with the least experience in the team most of my career, I shorten my learning curve with both on-job experience and in-class learning.

A word of advice: If you find an opportunity that has a lower salary but it's something you'd love to do, take it. Because you can always find ways to make more money, but finding a job you love, that's hard to come by.

Use your skills that you have developed over your life to transition you over to a new career, so maybe you don’t have a degree in project management, but all you do is run projects and you would be the perfect fit to transition to a role in project management, be a billboard of your successes and why you would fit into this new field. That’s what I did to shift my careers from customer service to root cause work.

Remember the 'why' behind the change you're creating – whether it's for deeper fulfillment in your work, flexibility, purpose, impact, etc. Let the 'why' and your passion for the vision propel you forward as you take the necessary steps and actions to create this positive career shift. Share it with others openly so they can support you and surround yourself with an uplifting and supportive community. You can also create mantras/affirmations to help you shift your mindset back to the vision when challenges, doubts, or limiting beliefs arise. Mindset is so important.

One piece of advice that I generally give to college students embarking on their first job is to focus on your transferable skills. Transferable skills are those that you have developed through the process of learning, taking on new challenges, and meeting them successfully regardless of a specific major or career field. This same focus can apply at any stage of your career. It isn't about the field or the degree, but what you have learned and the skills you've developed along the way. Consider your unique skillset and strengths, then apply them to your next step in your journey and shine.

Para fazer uma transição de carreira não existe idade e sim objetivo (buscar mais qualidade de vida, realização profissional, atividade mais compatível com suas habilidades, realização de um sonho...), é possível com planejamento e cautela. O mais indicado é que se faça em paralelo ao seu emprego atual para te trazer mais segurança, principalmente financeira. A transição pode ser um processo desafiador, pois a mudança envolve o emocional, decisões, adaptabilidade, por isso recomendo que tenha uma Mentora de Carreira ao seu lado nesse momento. O recomeçar é algo fascinante, e depois que passamos pela fase da transição percebemos que é muito recompensador.

One of the biggest challenges that a late stage career transitioner can face is that of imposter syndrome. The uncertainty that is associated with leaving the known for the unknown can be paralyzing. To overcome this, dig into your network and ask questions. You will likely find out that the bridge from where you are, to where you want to be, is really not all that far. Armed with your new knowledge, and your new sense of confidence, you will be well-equipped to start tackling the things that are needed to successfully make your career transition!
