Since the 1990s we have been implementing ABW (activity-based working) in our offices. I have been observing behaviour in the workspace for more than 10 years and I have noted that sharing and being flexible is not easy for everyone. How often do we intentionally choose where to sit during the day? Why do we still commute to the office? To see our colleagues and to connect with them. More and more I witness people’s frustration when arriving at the office and not finding a desk near their colleagues. I wonder if we are asking too much of the workspace and too much flexibility from people. The solution is not solely designed-driven. It has to do with listening and understanding the dynamics of collaboration, co-creating, and adapting.
