My experience is heavily influenced by manufacturing, where cloud technologies are still primarily leveraged in ‘front office’. As a result, system level communication requires tight integration with more traditional architectures and a wide range of data types. This is compounded by the typical industrial technology investment profile… where much of it comes in ‘with the iron’, eg when new equipment is purchased. This results in widely varying platforms, legacy operations technology, and a tendency to fully depreciate assets before reinvesting. Careful consideration must be given to what information is necessary to warrant investment, good data operations practices, security management etc. System level thinking is absolutely essential.
