For example, they can distract attackers from real targets, gather intelligence on their identity, origin, tools, methods, and goals, reveal new or unknown malware variants and attack vectors that traditional security tools may overlook, test and improve the efficiency of security policies and countermeasures, and raise awareness about malware threats and risks.

Honeypots, like many other security controls, are not a "silver bullet" that some people think they are. Attackers are wary of honeypots and targets that are too easy to breach. Honeypots typically are VMs but unlike actual machines, many times these deception machines have very limited resources. For example, they may only have a 1 MB HDD. Attackers are wary of machines like this and in their recon may check these resources. Deception technology works when malicious actors think they are on worthwhile targets. However, they can get spooked off if they think they are being fooled. The biggest issue, though, is your alerting or annunciation. Set up correctly, you should get a high-value alarm when these honeypots are accessed.

Honeypots come with their own set of challenges, such as the possibility of being detected and avoided by attackers using fingerprinting or probing techniques, or being exploited and used as a stepping stone for further attacks. Furthermore, honeypots may generate false positives or negatives depending on the quality and configuration of the honeypot. Additionally, they can present legal and ethical issues such as privacy, liability, and consent when dealing with real attackers and data.

Honeypots can be noisy if the alerting isn't tuned correctly. I've seen scans kicked off for vulnerability management that alerted the SOC on honeypot machines. These false positives and the noise they create can cause a burden for your team if not managed properly. On the other hand, high-end honeypots that need a lot of care and maintenance can themselves add to the workload of your team and take away from the tasks with the most value.

Isolate the honeypot from the real network or system by using firewalls, routers, or virtual machines. Additionally, update and maintain the honeypot regularly to patch any vulnerabilities and fix any issues that may affect performance or reliability.
